Chapter One: Gathering~Joel

“Joel, where are you? Joel, I need you to set out the plates before everyone else arrives.”  The voice of my mother, Elizabeth, floated down the hall. “I’m expecting at least fifty people for the efrat, and you know how Eliana and Amad’s family eats.”

I slid my flute into a case hidden under my cloak before lazily shuffling to the kitchen. “I’m coming, I’m coming.”

"You won't need this," one of the guards ripped the blood-stained bandage from Adron's shoulder as the prisoner was pushed into a small stone room. Underneath the cloth was the arrow wound he had been wearing when he'd first been caught, four days ago. The arrowhead was still in it.

" 'Cause if Cayd has his way you won't be around in a few days," another scoffed, yanking Adron's long, black ponytail. He took out a knife and shortened the hair with a few firm hacks, then held up his prize. "Would y' look at that pretty mane. This'll make a pretty penny at the wigmaker's."

Rynere straightened. She stared at him for a few moments, then turned and ran.

About two seconds later she collided with someone and flew backwards.

Rynere breathlessly regained her footing, staring at the person she had hit.

Tall. Brown-haired, brown eyes, looked like a hunter. He seemed just as surprised as she was.

"Who are you -" was all he was able to get out before Rynere whirled to the right and shot off again.

This time she was caught.

Strong arms grabbed hers. She couldn't yank away, but Rynere kept trying anyway.

Marian Ramon looked up as the front door opened, half-expecting to see fellow officers with prisoners from the hospital attack come in.

Instead, she saw a group of people dressed in black come in. Before she could send out the alarm, one of them quickly came over and knocked her out.

"Stay here," the leader ordered one of his men. "The rest of you, get your guns ready."

They crept along the halls in the station, meeting no police officers until they came to Jimenitz's office. They were walking by this room when they heard a voice.
