The Shadow's Heart

One: Where there is darkness

Midnight, there were no stars, no moon, nothing but the distant glow of store lights that seemed to hide just beneath the horizon’s edge.

There was a pasture that had gentle hills and an unsteady barbed wire fence surrounding it. It seemed to be uninhabited… until I came, well, I should say, we came.

It Had to be Done

The cathedral erupted in cheers and applause. I shouted and clapped along with everyone else, but my heart wasn’t in it.
“It had to be done, Conrad.”
My father had never looked so regal before, standing on the steps to the altar, the purple robe and heavy crown resting on his shoulders and head as if he’d been born to them. Smiling, he lifted one hand as if in benediction, and the cheering doubled in volume. It only began to die down when the trumpeters began to play a triumphant fanfare.

Summer Rainstorm

waiting for the rain
in the west, the clouds had been darkening
all day, even sitting on the bank--
when the air feels like this,

but the sun made me sleepy
like Alice
before she dreamt of wonderland.

Nadezda awoke with a jerk.

Get up!” Ondraya said anxiously. “Ulysses is in a really bad mood. No one know why” He has ordered all the prisoners to be taken to the main hall.”

Nadezda shoved off the ragged blanket and stood up. “I have a bad feeling about this.”

Zip the talkin’!” a guard growled. He unlocked the door and grabbed them roughly.

Ondraya was obviously used to this treatment, for she didn’t give the ‘OW!’ that Nadezda gave.

"Mother!" Radia opened the door to the house, stepping through the front room to the kitchen. She placed her basket on the table. "Mother!"

"What is it?" Anary glanced out from the back room the two of them slept in. "I'm trying to finish up some sewing -you can wash those greens. They were from Juna and Karn, right? For the coughing remedy?"

"Yes ..." Radia picked up a bucket of cold water from the corner and dropped the leaves in. "Mother, there was something else in the village today."
