The ride home was uneventful. Kearah met them at the training grounds.

"How did it go? Jokk's been pacin' and grumblin' all morning."

Solvar jerked a saddle-strap loose. "It went as well as my first day of trainin'."

Her face fell. "Oh. I'm sorry."

Goldtongue winced. "Have a care, Solvar! You are going to tear my scales off."

"Sorry."

Kearah glanced at Varian. Her eyes widened. "What happened? Do ye need treatment?"

Princess

Melissa Rose wasn’t a princess, and she didn’t have a desire to be one. Since her birth fifteen and a half years ago, anything having to do with royalty had repulsed her to the point of faint nausea. She had thick brown hair that ran in curls halfway down her back. The other girls envied that hair, especially the ones in the academy she attended. Golden hair might have made her more becoming, but Melissa hated hair dye and wouldn’t do it even after her mother’s lame attempts at persuading her.

The Xolo snake!” Farren gasped.

Back up!” Zanorm ordered. “Now1”

Everyone obeyed immediately. Nadezda had never been so scared in her life!

The snake turned at the sound of Zanorm’s voice. It hissed angrily and flicked its forked tongue, striking at Sanole’s leg and missing.

The travelers backed up even farther as the snake slithered forward.

Don’t run,” Zanorm said in a hushed whisper.

I've had several requests to post pieces of my novel, but it's currently undergoing remodeling, so I can't even give you the first chapter because I don't have a solid one yet. But here's the tentative "back cover", as some of you have also requested. (Note that it's subject to change as well) If you wanna know more or sign up for my newsletter so that you'll know when the novel's available, check out my website: http://emilyfaggion.com. Also have some articles about writing there.

Cheap Tricks

Ladders, mirrors
A black
Cat
Watch the rabbit
Come out of the hat
Magic, luck, it's all the same
Gullible minds are its favorite prey
Pick a card, any card
Doesn't matter, isn't hard
To see that it's short-lived amusement
A moment of wonder, thrill, confusion
Until you learn how the trick is done
And your bubble of enchantment
Pops.
Gone.

Tempest

Submitted by Bernadette on Fri, 07/16/2010 - 00:11

Dear child, hearken now

Thy thoughts hear wilts

Thou forget

The tempest thou bore

In thy song ever more

Now sing thyself asleep

With no wind or bird

To answer thy cry

Now search thee through the night

Till dismal bongs awaken thou slumber

I’ll sing thee a song

A song of the bread maker

And the song of the weaver

The song of the sailor

And the song of a tea maker

Dream thyself asleep

But hark! the words of a song
