Not One China: The Case to Allow Taiwan UN Membership

Submitted by Arthur on Sat, 12/22/2012 - 21:34

NOTE: This is supposed to be a speech! This was the case that my partner and I were running, until we found a large "hole" in it. Please tell me if this "1AC" has convinced you to vote for Taiwan Membership. I would also love feedback on anything you might find that weakens this case. (By the way, the greyed out words are supposed to be greyed out)

The Virgin Birth

Submitted by Benjamin on Thu, 12/20/2012 - 07:12

“Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

Senseless

Senseless

The morning doves cooed to me
On the dewy green
Lush feathers, lush blades
Beneath my naked feet
I closed my shining silver eyes
To the golden world
Which went abruptly black
And fell into a swirl
Beneath the cusp of melancholy
And the ides of grey
I’m all alone amidst the thousands
Senseless, I am prey

Tear

Submitted by little woman on Wed, 12/19/2012 - 06:11

a solitary tear glides down my cheek
the emblem of a night's bad dream
saltysweet i lie awake
realizing it was just a dream
just a dream my frenzied thoughts rest
i close my eyes and try to sleep
try to sleep though nightmares still creep
ready to pounce when i'm awake
yet when i sleep my dreams are free
free of fear and tears that glide
glide down my cheek though dreams be proved false
and so i sleep with peaceful dreams in me
nightmares fading only to be a faint belief

Does God Really Exist?

Submitted by Benjamin on Wed, 12/19/2012 - 00:43

In our postmodern culture, the attitude toward belief has changed drastically from the traditional view that has been held throughout the ages. A desire to discover the reason behind belief is often greeted with confusion, incredulity, or even hostility. Truth has come to be a meaningless word, for truth is supposed to be relative. Everyone's "truth" is equally valid. No belief has any greater truth or validity than another. With this view on truth, it is logical to ask why we need care about the reasons behind belief.

The Starwood Ladder (short story)

Submitted by Melissa on Sun, 12/16/2012 - 00:59

On a chilly autumn night, after the last field was plowed under and prepared for winter, the girl with no name lingered after dark. The work was done, but the quiet field and dancing auroras made her feel like all was right in the world. She didn't want to break the spell by going home. She sat on the split-rail fence, watching the sky.
Suddenly a trail of light streaked down across the green and blue, like a shooting star, so close she thought she could touch it. It landed at the far end of the field by the edge of the forest with a thump she could hear from where she was.

What is There to Live For?

Submitted by Lucy Anne on Fri, 12/14/2012 - 22:03

I. What is there to live for, When there seems to be no hope? What is there to live for, When I cannot even cope? Cope with unhappiness, Cope with death of someone close, Cope with many struggles, Cope with my reckless, proud boasts. What is there to live for, When I don’t feel impressed? What is there to live for, When I feel so depressed? There seems to be no cure, But perhaps that isn’t true, Perhaps there’s a person… Who can help and isn’t blue! This person I don’t know, Please do tell soon who He is! Who is He?
