the "home" in homeschooling and learning

Submitted by Ben on Thu, 10/03/2002 - 07:00

"Let us consider where we possess our home, and then think how we may come thither, and let us then also attempt to arrive there...." This is what the old seaman in the old English work called The Seafarer tells us. He’s a wise fellow. So we ask ourselves: where is home, first of all? We ask the question in both an immediate and a deep way. Where is home?...

If You took me atop a mountain
To the peaks that reach the sky
And said "Jump and I will catch you"
Would I just stand and cry?

And if You would command me
To give up all I own
Would I comply gladly
Or would I stand and moan?

Do I see too much appearance?
Do I fail to understand?
Am I on a journey
Against what You have planned?

Am I completely in the wrong?
Do I ever do things right?
And if I ever saw true darkness
Would I weep because it's night?

Schimff's Candy Store, by Erin & Jonathan H.

Today we enjoyed a personal tour of Schimpff's Candy Store, a Jeffersonville landmark.
Gustav A. Schimpff opened up his dream factory in 1891, but had already been making candy in Louisville since 1850. His store has been passed on from generation to generation, and is currently owned by Warren and Jill Schimpff.
The oldest continuously operated candy store (same site) in the country, Schimpff's has been through many historical moments, including the 1937 flood which almost ruined this old building.

Watch out you and me! Watch out!
Do you see what they might do to you and me?

This generation that we have been tossed into is headed for doom.

You will see there are getting in our room.

There is a thing are your parents and grandparents hold so highly. And rightly so. It is the constitution. You know the thing that tells us what our rights should be?

The nation’s leaders are taking it away. You ! Stand up and say "NO WAY!"

If you don't you will be sorry your children will not know what the word privacy means.

Then and Now

As my sister and I sit down to watch Wives and Daughters from BBC. I realize how different people acted then and now. But what is most interesting is the fact that it really isn’t all that different either. One of the unique things about this remarkable film, that is based on the book of the same name by Elizabeth Gaskell, is its astonishing ability to accurately portray human life. The characters have depth and you can feel the emotion with them. I found myself laughing with them and crying with them. When a character dies you feel the loss.

Dating, although our parents and grandparents, and possibly even some of our great grandparents, probably did it, it has not been the way it has been done through history. It is fairly a new thing, if you asked someone who lived during the Revolutionary War, “Describe dating,” or “What is dating?” they would look confused. This would probably happen from the Civil War era, too.

Start by looking in your Bible Concordance for “dating.” You will not get far.

A Starry Moon's Night, by Tabitha W.

Walking on a starry moon's night.
I always find the stars so bright.
As I stare into the sky,
My thoughts go flying by.
Finally I go to bed,
Only to rest my head.
I look up at the night,
Wondering why is it so very bright?
Seeing the moon so very high, I say "Oh, that's why."
Seeing the light flooding my room,
I hear a car go vroom.
As I fall asleep,
As I fall in so very deep,
I sail away,
As I lay,
Only to wake up at sometime,
And find I was laying,
On a lime.
