Irrational fears

Irrational fear we all have. However, we often deny it. I think it’s one of the things that makes us human, though. Does an animal worry the way people do? Worries are usually us jumping to conclusions or exaggerating circumstances. When my dog barks out the window at the mailman, is he doing either of these? To worry the way people do, a dog would need self-consciousness and an awareness of the past and the future.

A Word, by Sabrina N.

A word. What is a word?
But a weapon in disguise it pierces
The skin like a blade aiming for the already
Torn heart of one such as I.Then it kills
What left of the already weakened soul.

And to kill the soul is but a sin
And such a sin can kill the very
Essence of a pure hearts desire
Yet there there lies A being who
Takes joy in such an act and it does
So admire.

The Dating or Waiting Game

Rain trickles along the sides of my windshield wipers and disappears into the black, night air behind me. Water droplets on the windshield reflect red as the brake lights of the car in front of me flash. I’m driving home by myself - just sitting back and enjoying the ride. Passing the car, I turn up the radio to a song I have heard before. Usually I don’t listen to lyrics, but the woman singing sounds so self-righteous that I feel guilty not giving her an audience. It seems her boyfriend has left her for another woman. I listen as the singer, hissing with rage, addresses her ex.

Spare Time and Movies

For me, "spare time" has become something very precious and "bought" at a high price. My time seems to be evaporating around me. Do you ever have that feeling? I don’t seem to ever have time for "good ole" doing nothing. I can feel so trapped, as if I’m belted down by 3 straps: Latin, Geometry and Chemistry. The good thing is I have 3 indispensable allies. They are: 1, the most intelligent geometry answer book in the world. It somehow always has the right answer! 2, the back of my Latin book. (verb conjugations and dictionary.) It has never forgotten a word!

The Scarecrow,
Standing kingly in the palace gardens
"Caw, Caw," the winged enemies come.
Approaching the battlefields,
Oh! No! The Scarecrow!
Black enemies come, peck off his
Nose, a thread, here and there
But the Captain remains.
"Retreat, the scarecrow wins this Battle!"
And the crows retreat.
But the Scarecrow is still there.

Jumping Beans

I have a cold in my head. My nose is runny. I have a cough. I’m behind on math…. gloomy. Probably our "Jumping Benditos" are the most exciting thing that’s going on. My brother Paul got some as a present, and at first they didn’t seem very remarkable. (How remarkable can a small, brown, dried up seed be?) What makes these seeds so interesting is what’s inside of them. These seeds hold within tiny caterpillars, who slowly eat away the inside of the seed. It’s this action that makes these seeds so neat, When they eat, the whole seed rocks! That’s why they’re called "Jumping Benditos".

Seasons Change by Cassandra G.

I can see, as I look beneath the glassy surface of her eyes,
Pallas knows what fate will soon befall her.
A now rare, recognition
Play's across the old mare's face.
And makes the vision laid before me,
All the harder to bear.
She nuzzles my cheek,
A maternal gesture,
To comfort and console.
For she knows it is her time to move on.

The battle of three

It was the year1225 AD, and all of Spain was excited because there was to be a
new king. It was the time of the coronation of a new king in Spain. King Pedro , well
liked, had died two years after being crowned king. He had died in the Battle of Madrid.
He was not yet married when he died and was without siblings. So royal kingship fell to
his Uncle Luis, who was 40 years older than him. This happening was disliked by two
high ranking knights, Octavo and Bernat. They disliked Luis for his love of power

Poetry

I really like poetry. I like how through a few lines of poetry, a whole world can be formed: “Then with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.” I also love the diversity of words that appear in a poem-- “Though worlds of wanwood leafmeal lie.” Something else I find intriguing about poetry is the great importance a single word can have, and then on the other hand how a poem is more then the words. It’s the way they sound beside one another. “Like a shadow against the curtain of falling flakes.”
