I: Heartbreaks
Lord guard my heart
from me
for many of my heartbreaks
are self-imposed
I'm too temperamental
judgemental
comparing myself
to all whom I see
I form attachments too quickly
pondering love too soon
just to watch
my quick-built castles
fall to dust
I too often view myself
in pure black and white
I too often judge others the same
I'm lost and I'm crying
out for relief
Lord guard my heart
from me
II: Heroine
I see myself as the heroine
lost in a fairy-tale scene
a blush diffuses across my cheeks
a smile tugs at my lips
loving eyes hold mine still
love buds and blossoms.
III: Written Words
the power of the written word
you don't hear what I had heard
misunderstandings draw us apart
instant technology wounding the heart
without the inflections
the smiles, the frowns
sarcasm is twisted
my real meaning lays hidden
I meant to inquire after your health
you thought you had complained
too much
your feelings hurt
I'm just confused
tell me,
what did I write
that offended you?
IV: Hiding
hiding myself
hoping you'll like me better
if I'm not quite me
growing caged by my fear
contorting myself
wanting to be everything
only what you want
willing myself
to be me
for you
V: Empty House
the silent stillness
of an empty house
at times comforting
and menacing
the sun streams through
panes of glass
I bask in the aloneness
quiet music seems to lift me
encircle me
clasp me, grasp me
form my heart
nourish me
still alone
the twilight zone
creeps into the room
smallest noises
suddenly loud
dreams of demons haunt me
childrens voices
returning home
gladdest sound on earth
dispelling nightmares
VI: Trust
struggling to place
my trust in You
giving my hopes, my dreams, my fears
then taking them back again
I know You know best
but sometimes it seems
You are much too slow
or that You don't quite understand
and I think I can do better.
but now, I give it all to You
again
I'll do my best to leave it there
I ask
that you show me the way
please
show me Your way.
VII: Untitled
how has love become
a sign of weakness
when did seeking love
make you frail
why is love
something scorned
kicked to the wayside
to fulfill ambition
when did 'hook-ups'
take the place of commitment
I may be old-fashioned
for taking this stance
but when did it become
feminine
to be a feminist
Okay, quick AN here: #7 is not meant to offend anybody. If it does offend you, I'm sorry. I just feel that many of the things feminism says it wants are actually hurting women. Obviously, I'm all for women being able to go to school, vote, etc., but I think that the mindset of women being "equal" to men is wrong. All people are endowed with equal dignity. But men and women are different, and for a good reason. They compliment each other. That's the way it is supposed to work. Just like every human being has different talents. If we were all the same, then a lot would be lost. And I feel like feminism preaches a very narrow view, with little tolerance for those who disagree. And if you happen to identify yourself as a feminist but don't agree with the thoughts expressed in my poem, I'm not trying to shove you into a box. I just was thinking about criticism I've heard recently from some feminists about how the Disney movies make women out to be helpless, and how it all seems to come back to waiting for their princes, etc. And I disagree with that, and it makes me sad. So, yeah. All this to say, if you disagree with me, or I offended you, I didn't mean to. :) *gets off soapbox*

^ Love that line! You have such a way with words! :)
I really like Written Words, because it's so true. Anything sent online can be immediately misinterpreted, and it seems so much harder to fix mistakes than it would be in person.
I like the ending to Untitled. :) And after reading your note and re-reading it I understood better what you were saying. I guess I don't consider myself a feminist--I certainly won't go on rants about Disney Princesses. (:P) The whole point of those movies was the true-love thing, and although I wouldn't sit and watch them now just because they're, you know, cartoons about Disney Princesses, I loved them when I was younger. So I don't see why people get all haughty over small things like that when, I suppose, there are bigger issues.
But I'm also not anti-feminist, or whatever you call that. :) Haha. I guess I just make myself heard about my opinions on the topic when I feel the need. I do believe somewhat differently than you, but it takes a lot to offend me. :P And a well-written, really fantastic poem isn't going to do that! Haha. :D
Great words here:
when did 'hook-ups'
take the place of commitment
The whole poem, really, was wonderful. :)

^ Really like that, as well. Like I said before, you are just fantastic with words! Please do apply to be a monthly writer, if you think you'd like it! I'd love to see your stuff on the homepage and not have to go searching for new. ;) Haha!
Thank you!
Thank you, not just for your kind words, but for your honest opinion. It means more than anything to me. :) And thank you so, so much for your encouragement.
I'm trying to put together an application to be a monthly writer, but I don't know what to include as my samples. Do you have any ideas?

Ah, pretty much anything! I
Ah, pretty much anything! I believe I just sent in a short chapter of a story that never made it past that chapter. :P And you have so much great work.
If I look back--I loved Embracing Me--so that might be a good one. But, really, it's up to you.
Yay! Glad you're applying!! :D Can't wait. And I hope to see your stuff on the homepage soon. :)
I loved Hiding. It was lovely
I loved Hiding. It was lovely :). I'm not necessarily a feminist (your poem certainly didn't offend me), but I do believe that women should have equal RIGHTS such as equal pay, vote, school opportunities, etc. Men and women are different, and that's fine, but I think it's important that girls don't feel powerless or like they're worthless without a man in their lives, because women can be strong and independent also, and are perfectly capable of making their own living if they haven't found the right guy yet. Also, it's important for women to feel empowered enough to leave a relationship if the man has become abusive, physically or emotionally. I'm sorry, my rant is over!!! I loved your poems!

Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the comment!
And I agree. :) I think women (and men too, for that matter) shouldn't feel that they are only worth something when they are in some sort of relationship. And I definitely support equal pay, opportunities, etc. What I don't support is the notion that success is only measured by your salary, or the amount of power one holds in the workforce. I guess what I get frustrated with is the opposite of my first comment there - the idea that you are a failure at life or are selling yourself short if you are perfectly happy being a wife and mother. Why is there only one definition of what makes a life well lived? The definition of sucess should be subjective, but it seems like there is so much pressure to fit the one-size-fits-all standard that is pushed relentlessly by society.
So yeah. Pretty much, all I meant to say was that I agreed. And I'm glad you liked them. :)

:)
I really, really like the last one, VI, III, and I.
The Bible says that women was created FOR men and not the other way around. 1st Corinthians 11:8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.
:) God bless.
