Essays from an Adventure, Part 2: The First Plume of Excitement

Submitted by Mary on Fri, 03/09/2018 - 23:43

It was a gray, rainy Wednesday morning when Amanda came to my apartment to help make sure I was ready to go—she being a seasoned traveler, and me having never been out of the country before. I had been up for hours already, unable to sleep, and had packed and re-packed my backpack at least half a dozen times. I’m one of those people who needs very little in reality and yet, when faced with the prospect of travel, feels compelled to pack everything I own, just in case; not an ideal compulsion to have when you’re about to embark on a backpacks-only trip.

A Hunt in the Woods

Submitted by j. Glen pollard on Thu, 07/11/2013 - 01:23

I usually go hunting in the woods. I run through the white-picket fence that is in my backyard. I have my pure wooden bow in my right hand. It is made I out of red oak tree.
I wear black rubber boots just in case there is a thunderstorm and black and brown colors for camouflage. Birds chirp and salmon jump in and out of the clear, blue water, trying to swim upstream. I finally spot a red squirrel, but it quickly runs up a tree. I grunt, throw the bow over my shoulder, and start climbing the huge tree.

A year from today; today, the 21st of January; I found this amazing website, ApricotPie. I cannot believe a year has gone by so quickly, but it has. A year ago from today I would not have even imagined that I would be allowed to be a part of this encouraging community of home-schooled writers...but because of my parents' permission, I am! I am so incredibly blessed. God Bless You all!

*For Arthur and Mrs. Miller for advising me to read this book and for many others in hopes that they will read this book. 

My Musical Experience

Many children play an instrument for school. Or, even better, they may play it for their enjoyment. I play an instrument too; it's the piano.

I started practicing on the piano at the age of five. My parents recall that on the first day of my piano lesson, which would eventually lead up to eight more years of diligent practice, I was crying because I didn't want to learn and because I was nervous.

But now, as I look back, I cannot imagine why I would react that way to the piano.
