Divinely Beautiful, Dazzlingly Clever, or Angelically Good?

Rather old essay I wrote a while back...hope you enjoy!

In my homeschool curriculum, I am studying the book, ‘Anne of Green Gables’. The main character, Anne, had asked another character which he would rather be- Divinely Beautiful, Dazzlingly Clever, or Angelically Good.

I was given an assignment to explain which I would rather be if I had a choice- Divinely Beautiful, Dazzlingly Clever, or Angelically Good. At first, I was not sure which one I would prefer. And I am willing to admit that I’m still not sure which I would rather be. So I think I will just list all the advantages and disadvantages in each of these choices.

Let me start with Divinely Beautiful. If I was divinely beautiful, I would be full of pride of my appearance. I would gaze at my reflection in the mirror, more than I do now, and allow prideful thoughts get into my mind. I might think, “I am so much prettier than so-and-so.” Also, when I go somewhere, I might cause heads to turn and that would not be a good solution for two reasons. Number one, having people heads turn to have a glance at me will plant even more prideful thoughts. Number two, it would totally ruin the reason why I dress differently because I DO NOT want to be attractive. I already try not to wear bright, flashy, clothing so making people turn heads would not be a good answer. So being DIVINELY BEAUTIFUL would not suit me at all. So choice number one is out.

What about being Dazzlingly Clever? Hmm… that is a hard question. If I was Dazzlingly Clever, I would not need any help with my math or science, and my mom would not think that I am careless. Hmm...This is sort of hard question. If I was Dazzlingly Clever, I would get REALLY high scores in my exams, and perfect scores in my math. Now that I think about it, I am content on how the Lord decided to make me. I would not trade places with anybody that I know that is clever. So what is my conclusion of choice number two? I am content on how God made me and I don’t want to try to change the way He made me. So no, I would not like to be Dazzlingly Clever.

Last of all, how about Angelically Good? That’s another hard question. If you think about it logically, you can never be angelically good, because we are all sinners and we sin constantly. If we were always good, Jesus would have never had to die for us on the cross. And don’t forget the first two people whom had sinned first a long, long time ago! So I would not appreciate to be angelically good.

So as you see, I turned all these down options down. As you see, I think I would rather have neither. I just want to say that I’m happy the way I am. - “I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:14
