Human Hearts: Prolouge

Karak stared at the image on the screen. The two human boys were standing on the edge of the crater. One had dark brown hair, the other had blond. They watched the probe in the center, which throbbed with a dull green light.
“The specimens are close enough to scan, Supreme Senator.” Alixza said. “Shall I commence?”

Even worlds die. In a universe so vast, there is always, somewhere, a planet that is fading out and dying in the great darkness.

I was good at ignoring them, though at first I tried wildly to assist each and every one of the ethereally thin waifs I encountered. Now I knew better, looked through them like everyone else did.

Peter’s shoulder smelled faintly of seasoned salt and cinnamon. The mixed scents were not quite unpleasant, but they wearied Rachael’s already weary brain. For hard months, she and he had trudged until their spines ached from toting backpacks and their minds narrowly missed the brink of shutting down.
