A Conversation by Firelight

“Tell me, sir, will you have your coffee with cream or sugar?”
“Cream, if you please.”
In a room with rich furnishings and the light of candles bouncing off the walls, two men sat. One, with a very dignified face and bright blue eyes was dressed in a smart, red uniform; and the other with a glance of cool, quiet knowledge was arrayed in a blue coat with gold buttons. These two men were sitting by the fire and sipping coffee while glancing at the flames with serious eyes.
“The wind blows exceedingly strong this night,” said the officer.

The rush of cars and their angry horns drowned out every other sound. It was early November, and the first snow had crept down softly over night, to now fill the streets with dirty slush that splattered anxious people waiting on the corner of the sidewalk for the light to change.

Do you remember when I left a note on a SOL chapter that said I was going to soon post a short story contest submission that didn’t win??

(ANGEL CHOIR enters. They are whispering excitedly amongst themselves. The CHOIR LEADER moves to the front and motions for quiet.)

CHOIR LEADER: All right, everyone, let’s practice for tonight.
