In A Fairytale

Submitted by Clare Marie on Sat, 08/16/2008 - 18:54

I wandered through a fairy-land,
Covered in misty grey.
Time stood still, yet time flowed on
As I went a dreamy way.

Fire rose high in shimmering points,
Contending with the stars.
Smoke curled up in shaky wisps
And trumpets sounded from afar.

Hoofbeats echoed, and flapping wings,
Creatures of old these noises made:
Beasts untamed and things unknown
In colorful garb arrayed.

Gliding past in glittering numbers
Were folk of human form.
Wings of silver and violet eyes,
Thoughtful, and yet forlorn.

I followed the sorrowful, those ageless,
Mysterious people of grief and hope.
Softly they walked, singing and silent,
Pulling as with a slender rope.

Through dark forests of horror
I passed, inexistent,
Blood-thirsty ghosts surrounding
Like waves, so persistent.

Over mystic lands, unmeasured,
Aimless and wondering was I.
Chasing a path of moonbeams and starlight
I walked beneath a periwinkle sky.

The dances at midnight I beheld in awe,
Performed by the great and the fair
Beneath the clear eyes of the night’s lamps;
Dust swirled sparkling in the air.

From pipes and harps flowed a melody,
Composed when the world began.
It shook the boughs of the frolicking trees
And along the river it ran.

Closely I listened to that haunting tune
As it shivered in my bones.
The notes slowly faded, blending together,
Becoming soon a drone.

The sun swiftly rising, darkness dispelling,
All chanting music quite ceased.
With the searching beams of the golden dawn
Gone were the folk and the feast.

Scaling the peaks of the lofty mountains,
Grey, forbidding and tall,
I traveled untiring, hearing below
The wild unicorns’ call.

Silver their hides oh so dazzling,
Horns they bore of gold.
Solemn their eyes, pools of wisdom,
Proud their bearing and bold.

I watched the blue of the sea, white-tipped,
Foaming in the light of day;
Monsters of green, with tails shining,
Gleeful and happy their play.

I waded through waves of bowing grass,
Star-flowers raised aloft.
I took a road of weary ways, midst
Leaves of emerald, trees doffed.

Passing forever in deathlike peacefulness,
To the land ever binding,
I journeyed far on that ancient road,
Always seeking, always finding.

I wrote most of this in only one night (!), so that's why some of it is a little bumpy...

I love this, Clare! For some reason it reminds me of J.R.R. Tolkien's books. I especially love the lines:

"Gliding past in glittering numbers
Were folk of human form.
Wings of silver and violet eyes,
Thoughtful, and yet forlorn.

I followed the sorrowful, those ageless,
Mysterious people of grief and hope.
Softly they walked, singing and silent,
Pulling as with a slender rope."

I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right. --The Book Thief

I love all of the vivid imagery you put in! Your descriptions are extremely detailed without going overboard, and you managed to show me exactly what you were seeing. And for a single night's work, it is brilliant! Very well done!

Brother: Your character should drive a motorcycle.
Me: He can't. He's in the wilderness.
Brother: Then make it a four-wheel-drive motorcycle!

Thank you so much!! Your support is very encouraging. :)
