A Personal Survey of Fairy Tales

Submitted by Hannah D. on Sat, 07/21/2018 - 17:30

Having recently finished up a science-y degree, I am obviously well qualified to thoroughly and accurately discuss the cultural impact of fairy tales. Well, perhaps not. But perhaps my fresh memories of deep dives into the murky waters of f-ratios, geostrophic balance, sediment cores, and DNA cleaning have made me hungry for exploration in waters of a different sort.

Siren

SIREN

Rises from the ocean
Wet hair shining, black;
Skin pale, white;
Calling, beckoning,
"Come, come hither."

Stop the ears, close the eyes,
Deaden the heart
To her fatal song.
Set the sail; away, away.
Do not pass her by.

Throw open the gates

Of the world
and make your quest
as the old rivers run,
gathering tales
of old poets
'till your sail greets
the eye of the morning.

Then take down in your scroll
all that those wisemen have treasured
and guarded from moth, rot, decay.
Intoxicate yourself with all
the new things they will teach you
like a thirsty beggar
lifting an old bottle
of wine to his lips.

In A Fairytale

I wandered through a fairy-land,
Covered in misty grey.
Time stood still, yet time flowed on
As I went a dreamy way.

Fire rose high in shimmering points,
Contending with the stars.
Smoke curled up in shaky wisps
And trumpets sounded from afar.

Hoofbeats echoed, and flapping wings,
Creatures of old these noises made:
Beasts untamed and things unknown
In colorful garb arrayed.

Gliding past in glittering numbers
Were folk of human form.
Wings of silver and violet eyes,
Thoughtful, and yet forlorn.
