Millennial Downfall

This sand in our hands
Is slipping away
Our time for tomorrow
Taken up by today
The millennial downfall
Is our pride and false wisdom
Our obsession with highs
And our lack of true love
Productivity stems from caffeine
Willpower forgotten
Smitten with celebrities
Elevating internet fame
We see the world through a lens
Not knowing how to go get it
Conquered by lack of likes
We fall, defeated
Crushed by self-loathing
In comparison to others
We fall short in our eyes
When we look in the mirror
We live based on culture
And freedom of speech
Our thoughts not our own
Originality lost long ago
Because "different" isn't
We're dittos of each other
Being different together
Is different to no degree
Our gods are ourselves
While we claim Him in church
Our theology in our hands
But never our hearts
See we're trusting our intellect
And our knowledge of others
Instead of how God knows us
How He sits up above us
So instead of textbook truths
Or our memorization
Put down your debates
Drop prideful motivation
Examine yourselves
Deep down in your hearts
Hold His words in your hands
For with Him knowledge starts

This is very true. I've been pondering this recently, actually. One verse that came to mind while reading this was Mark 8:34: "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me."
The words that brought this to my mind were:

While we claim Him in church
Our theology in our hands
But never our hearts
See we're trusting our intellect
And our knowledge of others
Instead of how God knows us

Here, I believe, you captured in your words what we are truly doing: claiming relationship to Jesus outwardly, but never living in light of that truth, "trusting in our intellect", free with what we do, doing what we want.
Thank you for sharing this. I really appreciate it.

Thank you, Libby. <3
I was listening to a sermon clip by Paul Washer when I thought of this poem. He was talking about young folks these days have so much knowledge of the scriptures; able to debate theology fluently and articulately. But at the same time it doesn't come from the heart. It's more an expression of pride and knowledge than anything else.
It made me reflect on my own life. My most often uttered prayer is "Lord, let me be genuine."
I pray we all apply our knowledge of God with diligence, and with hearts of willing service.

I don’t thrive off of chaos: chaos thrives off of me.
