Roots

I. Roots
We’re making plans like I will see him again.
He’s acting like I will.
But where he’s going isn’t good. It isn’t good.
An airplane flies overhead and that’s where he’ll be in eleven days,
in the sky, flying through our uncondensed stratosphere,
thirty thousand feet above the ground, which is where I am planted
like a seed
spreading my roots and growing up,
learning to accept that my friends don’t have to stay planted with me.

II. Finals
Boa constrictor slithering around
My lungs, coil, tighten
Oxygen clouds, strained gasps
Weight of a wall crushing down
My chest, break, tighten
Deep inhale, sharp exhale
It will be okay, it will be okay
Toxic stress flows out of my mouth
Keep telling myself that
And hope that I’m right.

III. Early Birthday
it’s been a good night
we crouched behind the counter
waiting to jump out and yell
(although surprising someone
who we know to be armed
is probably not the brightest idea)
confusion
then big smiles and hugs
I’m glad I was a part of this
but it reminded me
of his impending departure
Wednesday, the last day
that’s when we say goodbye.

IV. Not Like Every Girl on TV
I am not desperate, I am not depraved
I have more respect for myself than that
I don’t need a man (or a boy) to make me happy
I’ve never been particularly dependent on anyone
I’ve got my own ideals, a certain fire in my chest
I’ve lived my life just fine without someone to lean on
I can keep going like this as long as I feel right.

Notes

Heyyyy! I've been busy. I will get back to that short story soon. Hope y'all like these :). But on another note, I have posted so much that AP has started deleting old works on my profile! I started using this website in September of 2008 and now the last post I have is from November 2008. So apprarently I post a lot. Haha.

Hahahaha! Wow, that's impressive honestly to have posted so much ;). These were great! I absolutely adored Finals and Roots!!! The sentiment in Roots was lovely. I'm more the moving around type so I couldn't relate in that way, but I've had a friend who's moved recently and that feeling of having stay behind and not wanting to the other person leave was relatable.
I love the last one as well :D

Thanks! Well, my friend's actually going on a trip to a dangerous third-world country, so it's a little different for me, but similar ideas!

These are really good, Erin! Especially the last is super relatable. And good news--Apricot Pie doesn't delete them. They just disappear. :P I have so much unpublished stuff cluttering up my profile that my old stuff started zapping away...I want to say a year ago? And anyway, I tested it by deleting something and something that was previously gone reappeared. I know--strange. I really need to de-clutter....

I like Early Birthday as well! And I hope everything goes well with your friend.
