You Might Just Be a Writer

Submitted by Anna on Mon, 05/04/2009 - 20:04

If you’ve ever poised a pencil over paper for long hours
You might just be a writer
If you know that recording stories isn’t a frolic in the flowers
You might just be a writer

If you’ve written down a battle and felt you’re in the fight
You might just be a writer
If you’ve struggled with a paragraph far into the night
You might just be a writer

If you’ve ever felt that what you write will never be its best
You might just be a writer
If you feel you could writer forever and never take a rest
You might just be a writer

If you’ve labored long on something dear, just to throw it out
You might just be a writer
If you cast yourself into your characters and feel their pain and doubt
You might just be a writer

If you love describing people, places, feelings, sound, and taste
You might just be a writer
If you think that shopping when you could be writing is a waste
You might just be a writer

If you’d rather write than go to a big party with your friend
You might just be a writer
If you’re rarely seen without a book, paper, and pen
You might just be a writer

If you love to read and delight in words
You might just be a writer
If it bugs you the this stanza doesn’t rhyme (even though the others did)
You might just be a writer

But if you’ve never written except for school or read a nice, thick tome
Well…
If you didn’t identify with a word of this poem…
You’re probably not a writer.

-Seneca

Methinks I am a writer....although I didn't relate to ALL of it. Maybe I'm only half a writer. :P

Brother: Your character should drive a motorcycle.
Me: He can't. He's in the wilderness.
Brother: Then make it a four-wheel-drive motorcycle!

Guess that makes me a writer! :D

"If you’ve written down a battle and felt you’re in the fight"
Yup!

"If you cast yourself into your characters and feel their pain"
Yup again! :D People ask me when I cried last, and I have to tell them that it was while imagining a particularly sad scene in one of my stories. ("But it was so SAD!")

yes, sadly, i have stayed up late at night worrying about a story and I also have a folder in my computer with about ten things in it that are all stories.... i might just be a writer!!!

I weep for those who say yes.

great poem. made me grin.

By the way, it didn't really bother me that the line didn't rhyme... I hope I'm still a writer... :P

LOL, I love this. I can relate to everything on this list except for the last part. I pity those who relate to that *sighs.

I must be a writer as well! Hurray! Yes, I have done all these things (or felt them) many times. You put this very well, Anna!

January 1, I've got alot of things on my mind
I'm looking at my body through a new spy satellite. try to lift a finger, but I don't think I can make the call, so tell me if I move, 'cause I don't feel anything at all.

Thanks! (BTW, you don't have to agree with all of them to be a writer... I'm just messing around. :D)

I especially like the non-rhyming verse. To be honest, I wouldn't skip a party or shopping to write, but I think I'm still a writer. ;-D

"Oh lovely snowball, packed with care
Smack a head that's unaware.
Then with freezing ice to spare
Melt and soak through underwear!
Fly straight and true, hit hard and square.

I must be in the beginnings of a writer. Not there yet, but soon I will be!

"Here are the beauties which pierce like swords or burn like cold iron." C.S.Lewis

"It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived."
General George S. Patton

I guess that makes me a writer too. I forgot to comment on this. Can you believe it? I started before and then didn't finish...weird. Thanks, Airlia, for the reminder.

"I decided to be sensible the other day and tore up David's picture. Could you please send me some Scotch tape?" Audrey Hepburn (Sabrina)

Couldn't have stated this poem any better! I rather write then go shopping or a party, yep. I am always seen with a pen and notebook, yes. And I have stayed up long into the night thinking about how to write one of those things thatnevercooperate with me! And yes, I identified every word in this poem so I guess that means...I just might be a Writer!!

Very good peom, Anna, very good. :)
