Mountains Old

Dark the shadows flee
Amid the empty valley
Grass shriveled, dead, dreary
Rocks ring hollow memories

Deep voices lost in stone
Silenced, the children’s moans
Durin’s kin dispersed alone
Lost, the hammer’s low tones

Came thither the dragon red
Flame, smoke, ruin, dread
Followed the wind, his breath
Hovered under his malicious head

Ruin he brought there
The Lonely Mountain bare
Smaug upon his bed rare
Gold, rubies, emeralds, fair

Thirteen dwarves traveled thither
To reclaim gold with sly burglar
Bilbo, the hobbit fifty in years
Also a wizard now disappeared

There the dragon roused from sleep
Forth in the sky with abounding leap
Circled the mountain, about the feet
Glancing with cruel evil buried deep

Casting fire into the city of Dale
Burning the houses red was the glare
Amidst the ruin the hero with care
Strung the arrow, shooting it into air

Falling into the ruin the dragon created
The terror of the north dissipated
Into the lake, designs uncompleted
To this end the dragon of old was fated

The clouds continued to gather and grow
As well as the armies of five below
Elves, men, dwarves, orcs, wargs of woe
Fought over treasure, wealth, and gold

Then came the wizard and Beorn the tall
Eagles flying through clouds above all
There came the triumph over the fall
There came dwarves in peace to dwell

The laughter returned, happiness glowed
Beauty of treasure in gold overflowed
Rivers cool gaily, brightly, rolled
The light returned in brilliance bold

Go dwarves! I have to ask, was this inspired by Thorin's song at the beginning of the Hobbit?

An answer to your question.... I actually got the inspriation from a drive through the mountains in West Virgina....
