Snippets of My Life

Submitted by Damaris Ann on Tue, 10/30/2018 - 18:08

I have been trying, like Little Women’s Jo March, to write about familiar things, so as practice I have taken a few moments of my life and written them down. I realize that they are mostly depressing moments from 2+ years ago, but I’m working on projecting emotions through writing, and these are the moments that I feel I captured well. So please, enjoy, and share your thoughts/critiques.

The 44-Cent Cure

A young girl from an Asian village is skipping along a dirt road on her way to draw water from a nearby stream-bank, her bare feet kicking up the dust. She waves to some of the women washing clothing by the bank, and cheerfully calls out to the children playing in the shallows. After prodding a cow out of the way with a stick, she quickly fills her jug with water. It all seems perfectly safe, but in reality, the villagers’ lives are in danger because of something they cannot even see.

Gun shots were roaring unceasingly. War had gripped by the waist the city’s walls. It was stifling in the small one-roomed house in which Adelaide had taken refuge in after praying in the chapel. The fire was blossoming to its full flaming power; yet, nay, its light was not bright enough to overcome the terror and sorrow of the injured soldiers, men, women, even children, lying on mattresses and blankets filling the room. Many were the wounded. Many were the gashes, tears, bullet-wounds to be tended.
