Chapter 3
I don't remember much in between seeing Macavity and waking up in a small, dark room that looked windowless. From the pounding in my head when I tried to get up, they probably knocked us out.
After a while, I managed to stand up and take a look around the prison. I felt around the walls, looking for a way out.
The first thing I found was the door. It was locked.
The next thing I found was the tiny, filthy window. I tried opening it, but no luck.
I went over and woke up Amber.
"Amber. Hey Amber."
"Mom, I dowanna go to school today, I gotta headache."
"It's Steph!"
"Steph, I dowanna go to school today, I gotta headache."
"Guess what? So do I! Get up!"
She groaned and relented. As she sat up, she slowly realized where she was.
"Oh, London!"
I sighed. "Yes, London. Will you help me wake the others?"
"Yeah."
Once we were all somewhat conscious, we started looking around the room to see if there was anything I missed.
There wasn't.
"What now?" asked Alyssa.
I thought for a minute. "There's a window around here somewhere."
We all started feeling around for it. Amber found it.
"Great, just great!" said Aly. "There is no way that any of us can fit through this!"
"We're not supposed to." I replied.
Alyssa stared at me in disbelief.
"Huh?"
"It's a long-shot, but I have an idea. If we work together, I think we can open it."
"But what's the point of opening it if we can't get through it?"
I took a deep breath. "I read somewhere that the Jellicle distress call was the word 'Vivat.' If we can get the window open, one of us can yell through it."
Amber spoke up. "But we don't know where the Junkyard is. How do we know that we'll be heard?"
"We don't. That's why this is a long shot."
"Then why do it?" asked Aly.
"Can you think of a better plan?" I replied. She was silent.
We worked on that window for what felt like days. Our heads throbbed every second, but we still worked on it.
After what seemed like an eternity, it finally gave.
I took a minute to catch my breath, then I thrust my head as far through the window as I could, took a deep breath and yelled, "VIVAT!"
We listened to it echo through the dark London streets.
"What now?" asked Charity. I thought for a moment. "Now we wait."
