Song to Stone

Look at the faces of the lonely cliffs
staring out at the sea
they raise their eyes at night
to glimpse the stars

Look at the faces of crumbling boulders
that say, come, and rest on me
they burrow down in moss
and muddy ground

Look at the faces of earnest, brave pebbles
laughing in rushing cold creek
they dance and spin in light
and water smooth

Look at the faces of silvery-cool rocks
resting in the shade of a tree
they look out at the green
and sigh so sweet

Look, look, it's all you can do
you can't hear them singing,
as the song's not for you
Invisible music never ceasing to rise
floating, lifting, becoming the skies
All of them singing,
together, alone; just
for the ear of the one
who first gave song to stone.

This is one of those great poems that you almost hear music when you read. "Song to Stone" is a perfect name for it, because the words and phrases fairly sing.

Thank you for a lovely, haunting poem.

This is soooo beautiful!!! The whole feel of the poem is smooth and you can hear the water tinkling!! Lovely job!!

Beautiful. That's all I can say. Beautiful. Especially the last part:

Look, look, it's all you can do
you can't hear them singing,
as the song's not for you
Invisible music never ceasing to rise
floating, lifting, becoming the skies
All of them singing,
together, alone; just
for the ear of the one
who first gave song to stone.

Wow, Hannah. This is beautiful. So, so beautiful. This is officially my favorite poem by you. I could see and hear and feel everything. Simply wonderous.

Beautiful, Hannah.  I think it's your best yet. :)
