When I awake the rain has stopped falling.
Morning dew has covered my face, making my shirt even wetter than it was in the first place. I sit up. It must be early, for it is still slightly foggy and the sun is still rising some.
I feel wet leaves and sticks cling to my hair, but it doesn't matter.
I'll get a home soon. I mean, who wouldn't want to take in an innocent ten year old?
Well, better start getting a move on now, I think to myself.
I stand up and dust off my too-tight kapris.
I start my hike. I sorta know where I'm going. I know that there's a small town not too far ahead, but then Wilmer and Denita would find me easily.
*-*-*-*-*-*-*
I walk past the town half an hour later, smelling the scents of people eating hot kolaches and drinking their coffee.
"Hey, little girl!" a lady with a donut calls.
Uh-oh.
"Yes, ma'am?" I turn around and say politely, pulling the sticks and leaves out of my hair.
"Where are your parents?" she asks.
I bite my lip, trying to decide wether I should say that I don't have any parents or say that they let me take early morning walks.
"I don't have any parents, or at least none that I know of," I say innocently.
"Oh, you poor darling. I'll call the adoption agency and-"
"No! I can't go back there!" I pretend to start crying, hoping that she will fall for it. I hide my face in my hands and peek through my fingers.
I see that she looks sympathetic. She quickly finishes her donut and dials a number on her cell phone.
"Hello? Mr. Hendricks? I'm sorry, but I won't be able to make it today. I found a child on the streets that needs immediate care. I promise to work overtime tomorrow. Thank you!" she hangs up.
"Well, whats your name?" she asks me.
I lift my face out of my hands, sniffling. "Emily," I say quickly.
"Ah, that's my neice's name," she says.
She grabs my hand and smiles at me.
"I am Angela Banks, but you can call me Angi," the lady says.
I grin at her, thrilled that she's taking me home.
Angi leads me to her...whoa....Sports car! I ride in the front seat, It is a convertable. Oh my gosh, I didn't think that I would be living like this.
"You know, Emily, I'm going to call the adoption angency first thing tomorrow," Angi says.
"Who's Em-I mean....Okay," I say. I almost spilled!
We ride in silence with the wind blowing in our hair for fifteen minutes before arriving at a-mansion?
Whoa, I didn't know that Angi was rich! This was WAY more than I expected. I have to admit I'm happy.
The adoption agency probably don't have any Emilys that fit my discription (even though I'm pretty ordinary looking) and I would live happily ever after with a nice, pretty and rich lady.
