I sat upon a spinning wheel
I knew the warp, I knew the feel
of spinning straw into the gold

we lived without need to beware.
Twas then I spun my gold so fine.

His fingers reached, they pulled
I taught the turning of the gold,
I taught it to my son, my boy
He was my greatest love and joy.
Twas this I taught that son of mine.
A father and a son, spun side by side.
I looked upon his work with pride.
And with my son the world was wide.
Twas then we spun our gold so fine.

Until the king’s men marched and came;
they came to take all but my name.
They took my home, they took my wheel
They took the warmth that I could feel.
And yes, they stole that son of mine.
They chased the light out of my soul
and then the world looked flat and dull.
Unmade was I, no longer whole.
Twas then I did not spin my gold so fine.
