Lullaby

Just one song was asked of me
One song, and nothing more
But I hadn't sung in years, you see
For me, music had died long before

But now music was required
To set this wee soul to dreaming
I couldn't say no to those small blue eyes
With hope and innocence beaming

So I searched my memory
To find something suitable to sing
One lullaby came back to me
But I was afraid to begin

I hadn't sung it in so very long
That I wasn't even sure I knew how
I feared if I did, forgotten memories
Would return and resurface now

Memories of times far past
Of my own little ones so dear
Two killed in war, one in giving birth
To this precious reminder here

I took a deep breath and told myself
That this boy deserved to hear
The lullaby that was his mother's favorite
Throughout her too few years

I still remembered every verse
And I knew it'd been far too long
I smiled down at my sweet grandchild
And began to sing a song

I can't think of what book this poem reminds me of, but it's out there, just you wait. One day you'll read it and call yourself a prophetess.
