"I’m sorry" Said the Healer sadly, "But I’m afraid that you’ll never have children." The couple sadly walked away, the Queen crying bitterly.
Queen Rya was embroidering by a window that Winter and her finger was pricked by the needle, "Ouch" she thought, as she sucked on her poor finger. But the as blood dripped on the snow she prayed dearly for a daughter with lips as red as blood, hair as black as ebony and skin white as snow.
Princess Snowe White, you might wonder, ‘what kind of name is that?’ I was born early in the morning in late winter. My mother had been in labor all night and when I, her daughter finally was out and in her arms, the Queen was exhausted but happy. She was weak and tired and close to death. Mother looked out the window and saw snow floating down outside her window.
"Her name" she gasped with her dying breath as the King and maids leaned in close, "her name is Snowe White" she kissed me on the cheek and placed her hand on my father’s. "I love you." She said to both of us. Then she died.
There was a lot of mixed feelings after I was born. Half of the people blamed me for my mother’s death and the other half where just happy to have an Heir.
Fast forward 5 years............
I was just sitting there, all alone, in the tree, in my new little blue dress, crying my heart out.
The reason for this was that my Papa, the King, was remarrying today and I was sure he wouldn’t have time for me anymore. Indeed, no one did lately. Everyone was scurrying to and fro carrying out last minute details for the wedding that, as a Royal Wedding, had to be perfect. So there I was, all alone, crying my little heart out when all of a sudden one of my favorite people climbed up the tree to where I was hiding. It was Prince Jayden, perhaps my best friend in the whole world. Our kingdoms were very close together and we saw each other several times a month and as our parents were very close friends so were we. He sat next to me for a while as I leaned against him, my sobs slowly fading. "It’s OK" he said and patted my back. I sniffed., "Do you think Papa will still love me after he marries Lady Carmondy?"I said quietly. "Of course you silly goose!" Jayden said to me and ruffled my hair. After a few minutes and a few more reassurances we final got out of the tree and slowly, hand in hand, walked to the Great Hall, towards our future.
Fast forward 8 years of childhood, during which I learned to like, if not love, my step-mother, Carmondy. I had many lessons and was taught in horsemanship, sword fighting, Healing and, of course all the things step-mamma considered "proper" for a princess to learn. But now, the real story begins.......
"Mirror, Mirror on the Wall, Who’s the fairest of them all?" She purred in a sort voice that knows what is to be said next. "Why," Said the Mirror, "You are Milady!" She laughed and said "but of course, Just checking." With a flick of her hair the Queen turned to go but paused, looking in the Mirror ‘Yes’ she thought ‘I really am the fairest.’And she really was. With hair the color of gold and eyes like pools of water and a figure to die for(and some men had) she really was the most beautiful woman within leagues. With a smug smile, Queen Carmondy left her quarters and went to the Court Hall to begin her day as co-ruler of Kkarne.
I had been up for hours and was enjoying the sun when the first nobles started waking up and getting ready for the day. I laughed and then started singing back at the little bird trilling at me. I laughed again, and sang back at him one more time before I got up and went into my rooms. I came out dressed simply but Royal looking (kinda) and went start my lessons. I didn’t notice the eyes following me or the whispers as I worked on my dancing and singing (though I didn’t need any lessons, so my tutor said) Finally, it was my old governess who came to me, teary-eyed and told me I was the spitting image of my mother. I couldn’t believe it. Me, the short, awkward, hormone riddled teenager, looked like Queen Rya, the Beautiful (yes, they called her that) I was amazed and then I decided that if I was to look like my mother I might as well dress like her too.
When I came out of my rooms the whispers were more like loud murmurs. When I stepped into the Throne Room, all talking hushed and my father sat there, frozen. "S-s-snowe?" He stuttered and came down and crushed me in a bear hug. "Can’t breath" I gasped. He looked at me slowly. I was wearing one of Mother’s old gowns. Long and graceful, it swirled and swished with every move. It was a dark green that perfectly accented my eyes. The whole court murmured "Beautiful" and "Breathtaking." Even Carmondy looked pleased. She’d been trying to get me looking like this for years. So the day passed in this manner, with people stopping and telling me story about my dear mother.
The next day Queen Carmondy got up and got ready for her day. She went to stand in front of the Mirror. "Mirror, mirror on the Wall" she said lazily. "Who’s the fairest of them all?" She stood there with a smug smile on her face that dropped when it didn’t answer immediately. "Well?"She demanded. "Erm, Um....the princess has been looking pretty good lately." The Mirror coughed. "And" he said sheepishly. "There have been people saying she’s the most beautiful in the land." Queen Carmondy was shaking was anger. "How dare she! After all I’ve done for her! How dare she steal my title!" With her face twisted into an ugly mask she strode around the room, throwing things and yelling until her face was purple. "Now you’re really not the fairest." Muttered the Mirror. "What did you say?" The Queen was speaking in a deadly quiet voice now."Uhhh....that you’re still in the top 5?" Carmondy turned bright red. "You." She snapped at a terrified maid. "Go get me Sgt. Garret from the Seven Battalion." She dashed off, not waiting to be told anything else. "Your Majesty?" Said the Mirror nervously. "What are you going to do?" "Sgt. Garret is trained in disposing of people quickly and quietly." Said the Queen. "And, he is completely loyal to me." "Dispose?!" Mirror squeaked. "You’re not gonna kill Snowe, are you?" "Me? Well, not personally. Sgt. Garret’s doing the actual dirty work." And then with a happy, but slightly evil smile she said "And then I’ll be the Fairest again."
