5Things Atheists Should Avoid Saying

Submitted by Lucia on Sun, 12/23/2007 - 02:58

1:
Phrase: B.C., A. D.
Reason: B.C. is "Before Christ" abrreviated, and A.D. stands for "Anno Domini" which is Latin for "year of the Lord"

2:
Phrase: Merry Christmas!
Reason: DUH

3:
Phrase: Gesundheit! or Bless you!
Reason: Saying Gesundheit to some one arises from an old belief that when a person sneezes, they are trying to get rid of a devil inside of them. If someone doesn't believe in God, it's well nigh impossible to believe in the devil.

4:
Phrase: Happy Holidays!
Reason:
"Holiday" is really "holy day". Someone with a quaint accent mushed it up one day and it's been "holiday" ever since.

5:
Phrase: Goodbye!
Reason: "goodbye" is derived from "God be with you"

Very interesting, Lucia.

Hm, interesting. I'm an athiest, and I'm afraid that I cannot avoid using these daily phrases :-) Still, I love words and phrases, so it's very interesting to know their history!

gotta love the Marines!!

Would it matter if it was not okay?  It's your business.  I'm not an atheist; quite frankly I'm not sure what I am.  But I'd like to believe in something.  But yeah, I don't care what you are.  Although, if I ever do end up in heaven, it'd be cool to meet y'all.

Naw. Well, I believe there is some sort of higher force, whether you call it God or not :-) I like the Native American way of thinking (all life is inter-connected). I'm glad you don't care, 'cause I like you ;-)

Erin, from some of your previous comments, I think that you would be considered an agnostic (someone who believes that there probably is a God or "higher force" but that the possibility can't or shouldn't be further investigated) rather than an atheist (someone who believes that there is no God of any sort whatsoever). I suppose the name shouldn't really matter, but...we're writers and we like accurate words, right?

Haha, yeah, probably. I may be considered and evolutionist, too. I definitely believe in that :-)
