Outside My Window

Submitted by Ariel on Mon, 02/09/2009 - 03:39

The rain drizzles down the window pane in front of my face; my breath makes a faint fog on the cold glass. Across the field is Mingus Mountain, normally a dark blue silhouette against the sky, now a rolling bank of misty grey clouds and falling rain. Another rivulet of water trickles past my eye, and I glance up at the sky. The smoky clouds are beginning to move apart to show small patches of blue sky, yet the rain still is drizzling down; the leafless trees are lifting their bare branches up to catch the droplets moisture; puddles of muddy water are growing on the gravel of our driveway, just waiting for my little brother to come splashing through them; the brown, twisted grape vines climbing on the archway over the sidewalk slowly divert the rain toward the ground. The water runs together into the irrigation ditch and trickles down to the pond. High in the top of one of the pecan trees a single leaf, soaked with rainwater, flutters in the wind. I watch as a stronger gust breaks its feeble hold on the branch and it swirls to the ground.
This whole scene outside my window seems grey and depressing to me as I lean my head on the cool glass. Behind me the fire in my little stove pops and crackles; soft music floats from my radio; I look out again at the rain. Suddenly, a single ray of sunlight breaks through the clouds--a beam of happiness in a cold and wet world. The light grows stronger and I begin to see something growing slowly, becoming more brilliant and pronounced as it arches itself across the sky. A rainbow is abruptly painted across the clouds and I feel something like joy, awe and heartbreak all in one fill my heart at the sight of this wonder of creation.
Just as suddenly as it appeared, the rainbow melts away. The clouds once again cover up the sun and the trees resume their dripping. The dark, depressing look returns to the scenery outside my window, but even though the rain is once again hitting my window and blurring my view, I’ll never forget the rainbow and the promise that goes with it—even though it may be grey outside and raining all day, the sun will always return to light and color the world.

oh yay!!! I made someone's day happier! It was actually sunny here. In Western Wa. Sometimes I think I could easily live in England since, from what i hear about the climate, it's the same as ours.

hmmm. Maybe it's some conspiracy of the wheather people!! Or maybe its that hting I heard about... what's it called again? Oh yeah! Global warming! jk. I'm kinda cynical when it cames to that. I just don't think it's all that likely and the earth is just going thru wheather patterns.
