Emptiness

I saw a doe and deer go bounding through the trees;

And turning I reached to take your hand

And show the sight to you.

But all I touched was empty air.

I felt a leaf brush against my cheek;

And stooping I bent to pick it up

And let your cheek feel it too.

But sullen trees were my only companions.

I danced in the crashing ocean tide;

And laughing I called aloud your name

And asked you to come and dance too.

But all that answered were the sea gulls.

I beheld a sunset in all its rosy glory;

And I looked to see if you saw it too

And to see the joy on your face.

But, dear heart, you were gone.

Lovely, haunting bit of prose. or is it poetry? Very lonely, full of longing. I like it.

I also feel the sudden need to know that there are other people in the house...

"Though this be madness, yet there is method in't." ~Pelonius in "Hamlet"

How beautifully depressing!

Thanks everyone. :)  This was actually/sort of/somewhat/maybe written because our dog just died a few days ago...not that I'd do any of these things with a dog, but this was how I was feeling, pretty much.

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." -Bilbo Baggins [The Lord of the Rings]

This was beautiful.  Not just quiet ... haunting.

Haunting.  That's all I can say.

Brother: Your character should drive a motorcycle.
Me: He can't. He's in the wilderness.
Brother: Then make it a four-wheel-drive motorcycle!

oooooo so good! Very lovely straightforward lines, and you exactly catch that wistful, sad feeling you get when you want to share something amazing with someone who's not there.
