Seems like everyone's
shallow these days;
busy tickling o'er stuff that
doesn't matter much:
dark, vile humor and
even darker smiles,
plastered on broken souls
that forgot the joys of
childhood.
Why is our laughter so
heavy all of a sudden?
Like everyone finds this pain
amusing.
I find it curious that
for whatever reason,
I am least happy when I'm
laughing.
What is missing here?
It seems like the last time I
saw someone laugh with
light in their eyes, I
was six years old.
Listening to my dad spin
tales of super-us,
taking down a monster
in space.
Those were the days, the
truly happy days, when
jokes weren't double-edged and
bitter,
like candy-coated parsley,
disguised as goodness,
easier to swallow.
What is missing here?
Does anyone else
miss the times when
smiling came with the rising sun,
and the things that made us
laugh
were kinder to our souls,
and didn't make us feel
like we were swallowing
spider-webs?
When sneezing puppies inspired giggles?
When hiding under blankets
Made us feel like sunlight?
Does anyone miss the days when
the things that made us happy
were trapped inside
more beautiful things
and not behind
such vomitous
darkness?
What is missing here?
I feel like everyone is laughing,
But no one's really happy.
Of course, this is a rant poem - my poetry usually is, sigh. It was very cathartic though, and I'm pretty proud of it. :)

WOWZA! Heather, congrats on
WOWZA! Heather, congrats on one of THE most relatable poems I've read! It's so difficult nowadays to catch people in earnest, much less without offending them in any way! Wouldn't it be nice to go back to childhood, when words never hurt because they were all just funny anyway. To assume the best of everyone, not feel vulnerable to anyone's prejudices or remarks. I love the imagery of childlike simplicity, because that's what true happiness, true joy, true holiness is.
Anywayyyyyy, long comment short, your poetry resonates deeply within me, and it's such a joy to read! It gives me a lot to think about!

Thank you!!
You're comment is so much appreciated! I'm glad you enjoyed it and found it relatable. :) Yesss, childhood is one of the things I miss the most, for all the reasons I mentioned in the poem. xDD One of the things I absolutely love is that God calls us His "children," which kind of gives me the feeling of simplicity and utter happiness, which is what we should have in Christ. <3
Again, thanks a million!! Comments like these make my day. xD

This was beautiful, Heather!
This was beautiful, Heather! What everyone else said. :)
And I just love the line that talks about happiness with the rising sun. That was me as a little girl, but it's so hard for me now. I understand and relate to your poem so much!

I’m so glad you liked it Libby. <3 <3 It’s always wonderful to remember, though, what we have gained in Christ. We are his children, the sheep of His pasture, and there’s is no greater reason in the world to be happy! Be strong, sweet girl! <3 All’s well that ends well, and with God our stories will definitely be ending very well.
