The Golden Compass is not a good movie. And I know why:
1. They are trying to kill God
2. There so called good animal spirits connected to them are called daemons and the bad guys are trying to seperate it from them.
3. The witches are supposedly good.
4. They mock Catholics in the movie.
5. The maker is an Athesist
6. The movie is atheistic and FOR KIDS.
And the second and third books and movies are and going to be even worse. I won't go into detail but please help us not to make this movie a success so we won't deal with the other two. Please tell as many people as you can. If you want to be put on the petition for boycott, please put your comment and not only say your comment but sign your name underneath.

True
The frightening thing is that the author wrote it not only to make a bunch of money, but to promote atheism. Philip Pullman said,
"I want to kill God in the minds of children." He also thinks that Narnia and LOTR are sick fantasies. He's really messed up, if you ask me.

ARRRGG!!!!!
This movie should be stopped at all costs!
It is awful!
If he can turn the minds of children away from God, the next generation will be harder than ever to win over to Christianity!

I don't get it.
This is going to incur some wrath, but I don't get it. Most movies are atheistic. Most tv shows are atheistic. It's what is meant by "world view", right? I mean, Lord of the Rings features immortal elves that pass over to another realm, isn't that fairly equivalent to what Pullman was trying to do in the Golden Compass?
In the movie, the main characters aren't trying to kill God. The book has some references to a religious structure like Catholicism but it doesn't mock Catholicism.
And what's wrong with witches being good, and animal spirits?
Ok, so the books aren't perfect - they're a little too scary for younger kids I would think. There isn't a good family structure built in and it features a little girl who's very independent (think Matilda by Roald Dahl).
But I don't see why this atheistic/Christian debate exists when pretty much all books, movies, and tv shows DO NOT feature a Christian perspective....
Why this is not ok.
First of all, most movies are not atheisistic out there. Yes there may be some Atheistic elements to certain movies, but the difference is the writer to these books and movies is a pronounced atheist and proud of it. In a recent interview he stated and i quote "My books are about killing God." Plain and simple, he said it...not me. Secondly, the writer of Lord of the Rings was a proud christian who featured many Christian elements and morals in his books. Yes some are not completely relative or true to the Christian life, but neither are they atheistic. Thirdly you'll clearly notice in the book a very strange name that Pullman gives to the animal spirits
THEY ARE CALLED Daemons, which is pronounced the exact same way as DEMONS! The reason it is not okay to portray witches in a good light is because witches really do exist and the ones that do are people who are blinded by satan and communicate with real demons! I don't care how good a family structure you think there is in the book (which by the way i have read the first one) these terribly unchristian and ungodly elements are completely opposed to everything the Bible stands for and as Christians we should completely reject and protest the movies and the books.
Lastly i would also like to point out that the later books in the "His Dark Materials series" feature horrible elements which i will not go into deatail on this sight because of the younger audience reading this. I seriously suggest to you that you pray and consider what i have written, and read your Bibel to see the reasons for my claim. As Christians we should oppose anything atheistic because very plainly, Atheism is opposed to the God we serve.

NO!
The Golden Compass was written with the thought in mind of convincing children in this generation that God is bad, and that they can kill him in their minds. This is unacceptable and should be stopped at all costs! Christans everywhere should protest this with us!

Just to answer your point, LotR is a special case. The Silmarillion and other background material make it clear that it comes from a monthesitic viewpoint with God [Eru/Illuvatar] superior to the "angels" [Valar.] Tolkien also refers in his writings to creating an English mythology with hints of religious truth. I'm paraphrasing here, but even though LotR doesn't contain "Christianity" per sa, it shows a gleam of truth...

I don't think that the Author is actually going to get what he wants out of these books and movies. God knows what this man is doing and he is not going to get away with it. God always wins, and you can't compete with him, letalone try and kill him. This guy is going to get whats comin to him, and thats that.
yep
Well, I agree that the Golden Compass is bad becuase it really does kill God in the last book, especially in the minds of children. Someone I know merely skimmed them and they got that the people were killing God. So the best way to show that you don't agree with the books is to NOT READ THEM or watch the movie. Some parts of the books/movie may look very innocent, but that is becuase there are people out there who do not know about the controversy.
Although I don't really agree that everyone who is supposedly a "witch" is bad. Like the Salem Witch Trials. Those people were falsely accused, and some people were accused just for DANCING! I personally would be mad if I wasn't allowed to dance. Maybe that would make me a bad witch back then, right? Just a thought. Becuase things are not always what they seem!
I know back then people even
I know back then people even SMART people were witches. I don't mean those. I MEAN ACTUAL PEOPLE WHO DO WITCHCRAFT. I mean Joan of Arc was considered a witch by the English though she wasn't.

I am not trying to be rude or say "Hey ppl, God isn't real!", but I don't see anything wrong with the book or movie. He wrote a book in what he believed in, and he's getting sucessful out of it! I don't see much of an issue. I don't think that he makes fun of it, I think that he is using the freedom to think! I hope this doesn't offend anyone!

I'm not offended
He said that he was going to kill God with this movie. Does THAT sound like someone who is trying to express their rights? I don't think so. He is trying to spread atheism through children's minds.
I know you might not understand it because you....I am pretty sure you're not a Christian...so you might not get this.
We just need to be careful and try to get rid of it or its power. And we can do that by praying.

Well falling leaves, you're right, but you're wrong. The poeple who maked this movie are trying to distroy are American heritage,Yes we have a Christian heritage.Plus they take it just a little bit to far with the anti-god thing.they're scard because the know that there is a God who is good, who died for them, and the know that they are bad, but they don't want to stop sining. and I will give you proof for God be cause it is my duty and because he is real!

Wait, if you're talking about Nate-Dude's comment, then he didn't say 'all' at all. he said America has a Christian heritage, meaning that it was begun by Christians. And hey! They decided we could have religious freedoms! So yes, now a lot of people might have a different 'heritage' but America (not AmericaNS) has a Christian heritage. hoop-la!

OK, I must put in my thoughts here.

He did not write a book about what he believed in. He believed in God, he just wasn't willing to accept him. He wants to kill him because he knows He is true. He wrote it in a book, because he knows he cannot actually kill God. So he is trying to kill what people no of Him, belive about him. Trying to make them think he isn't real. It is my opinion that if a person claims to be an atheist, he would not publicly claim God is true. So he is not an atheist. he is most definitely not Christian, nor is he Muslim, nor is he Hindu, nor is he anything else that comes to mind.He has no religon that I can see, so if you say: he is writing a book about what he believes in, I say: what does he believe in?
Adressing heritage: Yes America was founded on christian beliefs, but that does not mean that Erin's ancestors were christian. I mean my ancestors are German. Not christian. You cannot delcare that if you live in America you have a christian heritage. Your heritage doesn't automatically become cristian the moment you are an American citizen.
Kestrel: Thank you. Finally someone who does not think that because it's fantasy it is automactily non-christian. I know people who think that Narnia is just a child's version of LOTR. I guess if you don't have any christian influence, or anything that could explain to you that it's an allegory it would make sense for a person to think that. But when they have all the info right in front of their eyes......it's annoying to me.
