Singing the Blues

(Just some random thoughts- nothing major to report.)

This popped into my head not too long ago while reading some of Tamerah's stuff: What is it with blue?
I mean, to start with:
1. Navy blue
Where did we get that? And what was it called before the navy wore it? Sort-of-dark-blueberry-ish blue? It's like cadet blue- Come on.2. Aquamarine
Oh, boy. Don't get me started. Aqua means "water". Marine means "of or pertaining to the sea". (I know- I looked them up in the dictionary.) So aquamarine is, in essence, "water-water blue". What were we thinking?
3. Midnight blue
Where we got it is obvious enough. Sky blue at night. But if you think about it, midngiht isn't blue. It's dark, balck, or greyish-black (if it's a cloudy night). It's the middle of the night, for crying out loud (hence the name). The day I see a blue midnight will bew veeerrry interesting, to say the least...
4. Sapphire blue
Another easy one. Blue, like sapphires. Enough said. Except that not all sapphires are actually blue! Hmmm...
5. Turquise
Or Turqoise. Or Turquiose. Or Turquoise. What language is that? It's more green than blue anyway.
6. The phrase "Feeling Blue"
Where did that originate? It's not like people turn blue when they're sad. And tears aren't blue, either. You only turn blue when you're cold. So unless the person who first said this was very unhappy in Alaska, I would wonder. (it's right up on my list with "seeing red", "silver lining", "green thumb", and "green with envy". To say nothing "green around the gills".)
7. Royal blue
This is actually not too bad as the case is probably that blue was once a color only royalty wore. But I thought it was PURPLE that ws the royal color?

I could go farther (much, MUCH farther =)- but I won't. Partly because even as I write this I use a blue pen with blue ink.
I think I'm going nuts.

I hate editing. I still have to edit the scroll thing in Chap. 1... Oh well. I'll write the whole book and then put out the revised book...
