A New Mother's Thoughts at the Wedding of Her Brother-in-Law

Submitted by Kyleigh on Tue, 06/16/2015 - 03:01

We’ve been here all morning,
Watching the odds and ends,
Helping where we can,
But mostly
Just playing.

The tall one escorts me in
Though I hesitated to sit.
Sleeping babies sometimes need bouncing.

Sure enough
Before it starts
We’re walking halls
And fields
Rocking, bouncing, moving.

We don’t dare sit
In the front pews.
So we stand at the back
Always swaying
Sometimes patting.

The music starts
The room is hushed
But my thoughts are active –
Especially when she enters
Radiant.

I look at my daughter’s father
At the front –
These six months of life have flown
People say the years will, too.
But I want to stay here
With my baby girl
Asleep in my arms.

Innocent.
Close to me.
No threats of harm
To her simple little soul.
No struggles in her heart
Keeping us up at night.
No walking away
From the prayer of our hearts.
Safe. Protected. Near to us.

With every sway
Comes a prayer -
His way in her.
In us.

Just some thoughts running through my head at Nat's wedding last month. As much as I love watching S grow, there's a huge part of me that wants her to stay like this, where I can protect her and she can't do anything to cause us grief.

This is lovely, Kyleigh. Best of luck with your baby girl. :)

And moving.

I see pictures from 5 to 10 years ago... and there are some of my siblings that I wish were still little.

I know children who bless their parents, and I know children who are a constant trial and weariness. It is hard to see some children who were so simple and endearing in their little years grow to become selfish, narcissistic, arrogant and disrespectful youths.

But God gives grace and mercy. He is good. It certainly helps to pour our love into these little ones, to be diligent to train them and to teach them what is right... but in the end only Jesus can save them.

But what a blessing it is when they come to know Him and love Him when they are still little, rather than wasting their childhoods and only repenting when they've grown.

In the end, we are forced to rely on God for His grace in the lives of our children. May this be a source of comfort for us rather than a source of despair, for even when we don't understand His ways, we can trust God and praise Him for his infinite wisdom and goodness. And may this be what drives us to our knees in prayer every day.

This is so beautiful Kyleigh! Your imagery and rhythm is so soothing and calm. I loved the honest and real emotions in this piece. I am not yet a mother, but I know the strong desire to love, protect, and keep safe those I love. It is a matter of trusting those we love to God. He will love and watch over your daughter, just as He tenderly watches over all of us! From poems like this, I know you're a great mom! Thank you for sharing your mother's heart with us!

"Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity." 1 Timothy 4:12

This is a peaceful poem full of longing. I pray that God would give you wisdom and trust and peace as she grows older and may you both grow close in heart. :)
I just went to a wedding too, and I could definitely see it in my mind. Upstairs a slow song of violin is playing, and it matches with this poem well. :)

Beautiful, Kyleigh. So beautiful :)
