A Song of the Dawn

Submitted by James on Wed, 01/28/2009 - 03:31

Delicately, heaven’s gems are glittering up high,
Aglow as flames, till one by one they sputter out and die.
With all their smiles, the dark as well hath come to melt away;
Now see this countenance of joy – the coming of the day!

Come, see the East, ’tis ever bright’ning
Over earth’s far distant edge;
Most like to fire, the sky is fright’ning,
Even now, its rays are spread
To greet the coming bright one’s light’ning,
Hov’ring just above its bed.

Here, the brilliant bead hath come! It kisseth earth and sky,
Establishing its time of rule, its full revealing nigh;
Round and golden, strong and warm, it seemeth now to say:
E’er see this countenance of joy – the coming of the day!

This is another one of my strictly structured, ridged rhyme-and-meter, Shakespearian English poems. It contains an acrostic, like my other poems It is a Quiet Evening and
Despair and Deliverance
.
Enjoy.

This is extremely well writen, James!

Oh that's beautiful! How long did it take you to write this? It must have taken a long time to figure out the acrostic and then rhyme it. Not only that, but the words and the idea is perfectly lovely.

That is simply gorgeous!

Lovely as always James. I love your pieces - on one hand, I can appreciate the effort and workmanship. On the other hand, the flow, meter and rhyme are so well done that there's a certain effortlessness to it as well. Nicely done.

I love it! Keep it up!

Thank you for the encouraging words, everyone! I'm glad to know that you can see a flow in it. I employed a strict use of rhyme and meter, allowing no exceptions (although I hedged a little with the word edge in the middle stanza, as it doesn't exactly rhyme with spread and bed). I was afraid that I might be sacrificing flow and imagery for the sake of my rhymes and rhythms. And perhaps to some extent I did, but if you can still picture the sunrise in your mind when you read the poem, then I am glad. Thank you all again for your kind words.

"The idea that we should approach science without a philosophy is itself a philosophy... and a bad one, because it is self-refuting." -- Dr. Jason Lisle

It reminds me of Job 38:12-13: "Have you ever given orders to the morning, or shown the dawn its place, that it might take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it?"
