Twelve

You know when you were twelve
And you thought you knew it all
Bluffed your way through bottomless debates
That you never, ever lost

So you know when you were twelve
And you thought you were excellent
That everyone should look up to you
Because you set grand precedents

And you know when you were twelve
Leaning over the sink to swipe
Uneven mascara that you thought looked amazing
Poked the wand into your eye

Because you know when you were twelve
And crushes were enticing
He liked you back, you liked him back
Reality wasn't even trying

You know when you were twelve
And you looked ahead to adulthood
Lightyears away and you'd never get there
But when you did you finally could

You know when you are sixteen
And you've found the grace to step away
To set back and watch the others lock horns
You hit pause instead of play

So you know when you are sixteen
Thinking you look okay
Yesterday was better; beauty's fickle
It'll suffice for today

And you know when you are sixteen
In a hurried dash
Toward the mirror, steady strokes
You never miss a lash

Because you know when you are sixteen
And that boy won't like you back
You pity yourself for loving him still
Promise you'll get yourself on track

You know when you are sixteen
And you look far back to twelve
You smile at that know-it-all, think
It's all still good and well

Great poem with great words and rhythm! I love poems or essays written well about growing up, and looking back.

"It is not the length of life, but the depth of life." Ralph Waldo Emerson

This is wonderful. I loved the wording, the message, and the rhythm. All in all it was basically perfect!

"You were not meant to fit into a shallow box built by someone else." -J. Raymond

Perfect description! Everything was right...plus all the rhythm and stuff, but I mean like this is exactly how I look back on when I was twelve. Well, one of the ways :) Great job!

Goodbye? Oh no, please. Can’t we just go back to page one and start all over again?” – Winnie The Pooh

This is so perfect, the way you've summed up the age of twelve with just a few lines of poetry!!! Wow!
I know you and I have talked about this many times before, being know it alls at twelve :P and you expressed that so masterfully in this!
I love how you added in Sixteen!!!
"You hit pause instead of play"

Thank you guys! :)

Megan--Thanks very much. :D I appreciate it--love getting comments from you!

Erin--Yayy! Thank you! I was having a bit of trouble thinking of rhyming words. *sigh* So I fear it lacked a little in a couple places, but really, thanks!

Maddi--Thank you! Yeah, twelve was basically Year of Knowing All. I think it's probably that way for a lot of kids. haha!

Kass--Aww! Thanks so much! Since you've been dealing with me since I was twelve, you know what I was like. (O_o) Can't say the bossiness has changed much, but at least we don't actively engage people in Apricot Pie debates anymore. For which you all should be relieved! haha!

Emilee--Thank you, thank you, thank you! It was a welcome surprise to get a comment from you! :)
