CHAPTER TWO

Mel waited at the table and sipped her apple juice nervously.
Great! Her nice grandmother was crazy! She knew something would go wrong.
"....It's true!" Mel heard Gram say.
Mel chewed on her bottom lip, debating on wether to eavesdrop or not.
Finally, Mel couldn't resist temptation any more.
She set down her half-empty juice glass and went to press her ear up against the dining room wall.
"....Influence," Mel heard Dad finish.
"But you don't understand, no harm will come to her!" Gram said.
"Mum, I want to believe your fantasy but I don't. I'm not going to stick MY only child into the London Bay in hopes of her finding some imaginary herd of horses!" Mom said angrily.
Wow, Mel thought. Her mother was usually extremely calm and didn't flip out easily.
"They-are-not-imaginary-Deborah Anne!" Gram said, sounding exasperated.
"We're not going to do this, end of discussion," Dad said. Mel heard him rise out of his seat.
She gasped quietly and leaped to her chair by the table and pretended to be drinking.
"Mel, we're staying at a hotel and coming back to Gram's house tomorrow," Mom told her.
"Okay," Mel said. She wondered though, what if Gram wasn't insane? What if she was telling the truth?
What if there were water horses?
