When We All Grew Up

One of my first songs ever. I started to write a poem, and the music started playing in my head, so call it lyrical poetry or call it a song, here it is. Dedicated to my old family.

I'm lookin' into those glassy eyes
of my family in that photograph
from a few years back.
The picture's worn and nearly black,
but I can still see our faces,
smiling as the camera flashed.
And I wonder when,
when we all grew up.

A few years later, 'round the dinning room table.
I look around and wish I could still see,
all our smiling faces that are gone
to near a million places.
And I can't help but wonder
when well all grew up.

(CHORUS)

'Cause mamma's laughing in the kitchen,
babies' crying on the front porch steps
with old Uncle Tom, sippin' his tea.
Kids racing down Main Street,
getting in trouble with the law.
Those were the years that meant so much,
before we all grew up.

Wouldn't it be easier
if the grandfather clock stopped keeping its time?
An' let us look at each other
Before the camera flashed,
and filled our eyes with tears.
And I wonder when,
when we all grew up.

(REPEAT CHORUS)

'Cause mamma's laughing in the kitchen,
babies' crying on the front porch steps
with old Uncle Tom, sippin' his tea.
Kids racing down Main Street,
getting in trouble with the law.
Those were the years that meant so much,
before we all grew up.

But there ain't no goin' back,
No time for a second take
while the cameras keep rollin'.
And as the old photo fades into a memory,
All I can do 's wonder
when we all grew up.

I can already here it playing on the radio. It looks sort of like country western. Is that how you imagined it?

"There are no great men of God. There are only pitiful, sorry men whose God is great beyond measure." - Paul Washer [originally Jonathan Edwards]

Yeah, I meant for it to have a true country feel to it, something like George Strait or Brad Paisley. I have a friend who just started singing, and she's got an awesome voice. I'd love to have her sing it and hear how it sounds.

This is a great piece, Taylor. I think the analogy of the picture/camera is a very good one. And I like how you continue to come back to "and I wonder when we all grew up". It really brings it home.
I hope you get the music and everything worked out. Writing songs with lyrics is definitely harder than it sounds, but really amazing when it comes together. :) Good luck and good job.
