...you consider being called 'weird', 'crazy', or anything related to those words a compliment
...you play games with the minds of people who don't know that you're a homeschooler. Like telling them that you're class valedictorian, and later in the conversation telling them you're class dunce
...you have trouble keeping quiet when someone makes a mistake in grammar or uses a word incorrectly
...you wonder how other kids ever survived public school
...you can sense when somebody's going to ask if you stay in your pajamas all day (and the answer is NO)
...you know that the average person consumes around 10 pounds of dirt in their lifetime. You also know that the average gardening homsechooler consumes about 25
...you've had people genuinely worry about your socialization -"Does he/she have any friends?" -and it's all you can do to keep from bursting into laughter
...you tell said people-that-worry-about-your-socialization that you socialize with 'my family, the dog, and our thirty-two chickens. And oh, right, I have friends too'. And then you watch their faces.
...during lunch/dinner, there are two scenarios. Either everybody has a book to read and nobody talks beyond 'Pass the apples please' or everybody talks so much that nobody hears anybody else.
...you hate the question 'What grade are you in?' 'Cause you're doing work in three different grades -either that or you do all your work with your sister who's two years older than you and yet you're technically in a lower grade.
...you love it when you talk to the 85\% of kids who have never shared a room with a sibling. "You share a room?" "Yeah." "That must get really messy!" "Actually, no ...the six people who I share it with and myself have it on our chore lists..."

Oh dear... as if there was any doubt, I now know for absolute certain that I am indeed a homeschooler. Very good! Thanks for the smile :)

hehehe..
Can anyone relate to being class dunce and class valedictorian at the same time and telling a public schooler this and totally confusing them?
I haven't, but it would be interesting!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's totally my family!!! :) Good job, Tahila. (:
:-)
This is so good--and true! I especially can't stand it when people make grammar mistakes and have to refrain from telling them that they were incorrect! Socialization is another big assumption people make. Thanks for writing this!
Hi Tahlia
This is Mary. Loved this essay. I'm currently searching the archives of AP for essays on the subject of homeschooling and found this one. I've linked to it from my blog, thosewhowillstand.blogspot.com. If you have any problem at all with this, please just let me know and I will remove the link. Thanks!

Me: He can't. He's in the wilderness.
Brother: Then make it a four-wheel-drive motorcycle!
