The Sirens of Slumber

The calm of night is ever blest
With sweet serenity and rest
As I lie buried in my nest
My dreams I keep.

The sky, with stars, is also blest,
Before it brings, while wheeling West,
The coming dawn, that glowing pest;
O, precious sleep!

The dark of night begins to fade,
The light of day will now invade,
And ruin the Sand Man’s serenade;
My dreams sublime.

My rest, cut short, has been betrayed;
O, stay, you sun!  O, be delayed!
If only time were disobeyed.
It can’t be time!

I raise my head; bright stars I see
The clock is ticking, one-two-three;
That noise delights to disagree!
I groan: go away!

A heavy weight of high degree
Now weighs me down, and I agree:
My pillow’s there, it’s calling me!
My head I lay.

So let me lie here, let me rest;
I’ve only slept eight hours, I’m stressed!
I need a solid ten at least.
O let me sleep!

For nightly dreams are ever blest,
My weary body finds its rest;
But ne’er enough, ’twill soon be missed.
O sorrow!  I weep.

Maybe if you didn't stay up with a flashlight reading every night, you'd spring out of bed with a smile come morning.

Oh, wait... that's me.

I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right. --The Book Thief

Made me smile. This is the story of my life. Just...want...to....sleep....

Great poem! I laughed when I read the last line-- that was me this morning... actually, most mornings. ;)

This makes me glad I'm a morning person and love getting up in the morning... though if I've gotten to bed late I'd rather roll over. But my mind functions best between 7 and 11 in the morning, I think. And then by 9:30 PM I start shutting down...

But since I have two sisters who share your wonderfully poetically stated thoughts above, I can relate (while my brother and I get the worm early in the morning).

That was  me this morning! Exactly. At youth group last night, we were supposed to name three things we liked. I said

Writing

Sleeping!

Haha!  The story of my life. :)

Lots of poetry is solemn and grave. This was funny :) I'm glad to see another side to you, James ;)
I like the line: 'that glowing pest'. My bedroom window faces due east, and I don't sleep well with light on, even a little bit, so it's beastly when the sun starts shining in at about 7 o'clock, and I still have half and hour left before I have to get up. I related really well with what you said, as well. 'I need ten at least'. LOL. Unfortunately, I can write best at night, and not at all in the morning.

 Like most others who have commented here, I have to say that this is an excellent poem and very relatable.
