Her name was Brighid O'Grady
she was the blacksmith's daughter
she had hair like sunshine and eyes like the sea
and her heart was lost on the second son of the carpenter
his name was Tommy MacMaster
and he was everything a man should be
Brighid O'Grady
she went to Mass every morning
she gave her heart to Jesus and took His in return
and when he didn't have to deliver something into town
she saw Tommy MacMaster
and that never failed to make her day
Brighid O'Grady
she had known him since childhood
they had played together when the backyard tree was small
now they hardly talked and she was dying to know what he'd do
if Tommy MacMaster
knew he had Bridie O'Grady's heart
Brighid O'Grady
she worked for old widow Hannon
every day she walked through the meadows to her house
but one day she stayed late, got caught in a rainstorm
and then Tommy MacMaster
found her, wet through and terrified
Brighid O'Grady
she knew she'd never forget it
the way he looked when he found her by the road
it was all she could do to gasp out a thank you
as Tommy MacMaster
stepped up just in time to save her day
The sun went on setting and coming back up in the morning
her heart went on beating, trying not to dream too hard
she couldn't help wondering if she was holding out for too much and then one day she met him coming back from town
He smiled
He said "'Evenin', Bridie"
and then, knee in the dirt, he caught her hands
his eyes found hers, and her heart stopped beating
and he said
"Brighid O'Grady
do you know how I love you?
I've been learnin' it myself this year or so atleast,
wonderin' what you would do if you knew you had my heart,
so here's Tommy MacMaster
to ask you could you take his love."
And Brighid O'Grady
well she had all that she could do to say "yes"

Love it!, Aisling!
I love poetry like this, poetry that is good just as poetry, but poetry that is good as a story too! This one reminds me of some of the old Irish bards' songs. Love it! Keep up the good work, Aisling!

Me: He can't. He's in the wilderness.

I love this - like Mary said, it's very ballad-ish. <3

Sold for a smile on the face of a fantasy
Truth found a home in the pages of fairy-tales

I like the way you wrote it,
I like the way you wrote it, and it's really romantic and sweet.
