The Voice of the Woods

Submitted by Tori on Mon, 02/23/2009 - 19:00

The trees wave their welcoming branches,
The woodpecker calls in his sweet little tune.
The grass sways, and the mice gather 'round
I will welcome the voice of the woods very soon.

Wandering farther than I know I should be,
My head screams at me, "Go back! Go back!"
But my heart and the trees call me forward,
Drawing me along the unknown track.

I climb up one old, lonely tree,
So old I'm surprised it still stood.
And I tilt my head back and I close my eyes,
And I listen to the voice of the woods.

I breathed in the air all around me,
Sensing the wood of my tree.
And I hear the whispers calling my name,
Telling my heart and my soul to break free.

The sky turned dark, and the shadows grew long,
And I sorrowfully climbed from my tree.
I turned back home, walking away,
Yet the voice of the woods was still calling to me.

This is a lovely poem. As much as I prefer the city to the country, I always love poems about quiet undisturbed places, so, naturally I like this poem. It has good rhythm too.

yeah, hopefully it's not that bad, it was such a pain to write!

So nice it almost makes me forget how much
I have suffered in the woods. Almost, not quite.
