How to Write Poetry

Submitted by Timothy on Wed, 09/10/2008 - 01:53

The good poems always rhyme
And always have time
And are artistic, like a mime

If it doesn’t rhyme, it’s not the real deal
Even if it makes you feel
It isn’t poetry, and it isn’t real

Blank verse is pretty bad
Free verse is really quite sad
Frankly, it makes me mad

If you want to really make it
As a writer, and fit
In, you have to rhyme a bit

When you pick up the pen
Try to fit in
Free verse is actually a sin

No paragraphs split in parts
Will ever move the poet’s heart
Please, don’t even start

So remember, always rhyme
Even if you have to write a line
That doesn’t say anything. Lime.

When I was younger and thought I was easily the greatest poet ever, I insisted that non-rhyming poetry wasn't poetry. Apparently somebody forgot to inform Whitman and Frost about my opinion. This is my tribute to my former militant rhyming.

Cute, Timothy! I used to think poetry was all about the rhyming, too. Ignorant me. :)
Job well done!

The ending made me laugh.

Reminds me of this...

Roses are red
Violets are blue
Some poems rhyme
But this one doesn't.

I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right. --The Book Thief

Resisting the unpleasant temptation to take this as a personal criticism...I congratulate you on a thoroughly amusing piece. :) Great job.

Well, I think every poet could use a little more freedom to actually say what they mean.

But, the only person I had in mind when I wrote this was myself. :P

=D That was funny. I like the ending!

Is funny!

Definitely ironic...:0) This was great! Have to admit I'll read any type of poetry, but my personal favorite is rhyming even though much of mine is often free verse.
