Chapter Six: Palet

Fiction and Faith

Ariach swung again, thrusting at my side.
I swung with all my might, trying to knock his sword away. The collision of our blades rang out over the crowd’s roar.
Vibrations shook my blade, and it fell to the ground. Ariach's dagger remained fixed at my chest. I sank to my knees.
I was dead. There was no doubt about that. Ariach reached over and cut my helmet strap. He stared at me for a long time. I wondered what was going through his mind. A tear rolled down his cheek.
He bent down, raising his sword high-
And handed it to me.

Den Vakre En/The Beautiful One

Den Vakre En
The Beautiful One

Warded against
Weapons of foes
All swore the oath
Save mistletoe

Loki, disguised,
Learned of the plant
The bane fateful
To cause Balder’s death

Loki, the sly,
Laughing guided
Blind Hœnir’s dart
Heedlessly thrown

“Where did it fall?”
“Where did it land?”
Asgard fell silent
Aghast by fate

Mistletoe’s kiss
Murdered the god
Odin’s fair son
Asgard’s most loved

Balder the fair

            Two Years Later

Drums beat heavily outside Rakeyna’s walls.

River

Step into the river.

Step into eternity.

Water licks about my shoulders, tugging at my hair so it swirls about me like water weeds. I take one step, then another. Lopsided pebbles wiggle under my bare feet, threatening to push my feet away. Fish peer out from underneath the overhanging banks. One brushes against my legs, leaving only ripples to show its passage.

Faith Victorious: Chapter Two

Chapter Two: The Young Lieutenant             Tuesday afternoon Timothy waited by the well, his back resting against the poles that supported the roof which covered the opening of the well. Young girls carried buckets to fill with water and take home. Carts rumbled by, the drivers struggling to avoid ruts in the road. Timothy breathed in the air. I love this city, he thought.

Radical Relationships~ Insights from Red by Ted Dekker

[This essay contains massive spoilers from Red, middle novel of Ted Dekker’s Circle Trilogy. DO NOT read if you haven’t read the book.]

When I first read Red, I thought it was really good, but found the character Justin confusing. His teachings of peace with the Scabs seemed heretical, while I sensed hypocrisy in the Great Romance.

But one scene changed that. It was the closest I’ve ever come to unity with a fictional character. My eyes sprang ahead…
