Writing Challenge

Submitted by Sarah on Sat, 11/15/2008 - 00:14

I plop down in front of my computer; placing my hands on the computer and type for several minutes, the silence broken solely by the tapping of my keys.
Resting my chin on my hand, I scroll down the page, reading what I have written. Muttering to myself, I delete several lines and try to mash these jumbled letters and words into sentence fragments, then sentences, then finally something worth showing. At last I decide it is good enough and start to leave, I hover between leaving and staying, finally raising the mouse and in one, hard stroke deleting everything I had just done.

Little County Fair

The lights that blink,
the rides that whir,
smells and sounds
become a blur

the music from the carousel,
the crowds meandering by,
the wagon wheels rolling along,
the ferris wheel so high

buttered corn and lemonade,
sugary funnel cake,
the laughter and the joy all round,
and trailing in your wake

spinning, soaring,
falling, turning,
up and down and round and round,
for this my soul's been yearning

The Amazing World of Colors!

Submitted by Maddie J-3 on Tue, 03/11/2008 - 20:42

Have you ever wondered about the world’s colors? Why the sky is that baby blue shield. Why the grass that ripples in the breeze holds that dark, fresh green? The sun brilliantly shines its yellowness down to earth. What if it was all different?! What if the sky was a bright green! And the grass and trees all blue. The sun would shine its splendid purple onto the earth. Close your eyes and try to picture this. Go ahead! It would be fun to color a coloring book like this! The tree’s bark a pure white! The water sparkles with a bold orange! But when you open your eye’s.

The Best Dog in the World

Submitted by Edith on Sat, 06/30/2007 - 16:37

A white bundle of fur behind those big brown eyes
A black nose and pink tongue that pleases when one cries
A big paw that taps your lap when you sit
A wagging tail, twitching ears, excited barks and a sweet lick

Wanting nothing but love and care and kisses and hugs,
My good and loyal friend, Falkor, the best, best, pup.
I say “dance”, but instead he rolls upon the floor
I say “beg”, but he sits and gives one paw.
