The commander stared. His soldiers were starting to look nervous. The one beside Rynere gave an audible gulp. She rolled her eyes, but didn't offer any information.
But why not? Why shouldn't she tell these men what was going on? If they found Tass -well, a few more men and they would be able to keep an eye on him. Running from them would keep Tass busy. And she could get returned to her home.
The clearing was silent for a few more awkward moments. Then the commander sheathed his sword and turned around to face Rynere.
"You'll be returning with us," he said shortly. "You can tell us more about this rogue. Where are you from?"
Rynere stated the name of the small village.
The commander's eyes widened briefly.
"How long have you been traveling?"
"About two days."
"Have been traveling willingly?"
"If you're asking if I volunteered for this trip," Rynere said dryly, "then no."
"Did you possibly catch the name of where you were going?"
Rynere shook her head.
The commander muttered something under his breath and hit a nearby tree with his fist.
"What's wrong?" Rynere asked bluntly.
"We need to get you back to the garrison now," he said, suddenly preoccupied. "Thalror, get the young lady onto my horse and bring her there. You are the only one who is to be near her. Don't allow her to see anyone!"
"Yes, sir."
There was a whirlwind of activity, and Rynere suddenly found herself seated on a brown charger with no idea of what to do.
"I can't ride!"
"Pity, neither can I."
Rynere's head whipped towards the sound. Tass was leaning against a tree a few yards away. Grinning.
He winked at her, and disappeared before she could make a sound.
She was sitting there with her mouth open when Thalror tapped her on the shoulder.
"Miss, we need to leave. Now."
"I can't ride!"
"And I don't have time to teach you. Grab hold of his mane and kick him hard with your heels. And hang on."
Rynere did as she was told.
And then all she could do was hang on. She hoped the horse knew where to go. And she hoped that it would stop in time. She couldn't stop it and she had no idea where she was.
But a few minutes later the horse did slow to a stop, in front of an large, ominous gray building.
Thalror dismounted and helped the still-dazed Rynere down from the horse.
"The garrison," he said. "The commander should be here soon."
I sincerely hope you finish
I sincerely hope you finish this story before AP closes! If not, I need your blog or email or something so I know the ending. Tass is great!
