"Is she reviving yet?" Rynere heard a voice from somewhere up above her. Probably Kyndran.
"Doesn't seem like it." Tace.
"Have you figured out what caused it?"
"Maybe an animal, or just her imagination. Miss Ryn, you awake yet?"
Rynere opened her eyes. She was on her cot, Tace on one knee beside her looking slightly concerned. Kyndran had just come in from the outside, and Danid was standing in a nearby corner.
"Why did you faint?" Kyndran asked instantly.
"Faint?" Rynere blinked. "Did I -where's Tass? Where'd he go?"
Tace looked to Kyndran, Danid, then back to Rynere.
"Tass is dead. You know that."
"But I saw him!" Rynere pushed herself to a sitting position.
Tace paused, then continued carefully.
"That must've been your imagination. Tass isn't here."
"He -he was right outside!"
"If he had been there, he would have caught you when you fainted. You have a large bruise on your head, evidence that he didn't."
"But he was there!"
Kyndran cocked an eyebrow and glanced at Tace.
"How are you planning on convincing her otherwise?"
"Uh, Tace?" Danid shut the door and turned to them, looking slightly worried. "There's a band of armed men approaching us -looks like they're from the palace Miss Sylver escaped from."
Tace got up and glanced out the window.
"They are," he said shortly.
"They've got Kace with them," Kyndran added. "They don't look that happy."
"Well, they probably think we kidnapped her, and I wouldn't be too happy about that either -"
"Every person inside the house is to come out with their hands in full view!" a voice suddenly barked.
Everyone looked at Tace, who nodded.
"Resistance'll get us killed."
"We're gonna get killed anyway -it's not like they'll believe us!" Kyndran interjected.
Tace walked towards the door and opened it.
"Yes?" he said shortly.
"Return the princess," the leader of the party said, then pointed to Kace. "Or this man dies."
