Becoming Bilingual (Etre Bilingue)

“ Qu’est-ce que tu veux encore”?
What more do you want?
But don’t use “tu” for her –
you’ll offend and your ignorance flaunt.

This is formal, “vous voulez”
is the “phrase du jour”.
And don’t say “hey!”
“Dis-tu “cou cou””!

How did “cheval” lead to chivalry?
(It involves knights and their kind
and “les règles de la chevalerie”)
Etymology and history intertwine.

But don’t stop there!
“Chassures” versus “cheveux”.
One is shoes, and one is hair.
Confusing them is easy to do.

But not as easy as [mɛr], [pɛr], or [vɛr].
“Maire, maires, mère, Mère, mères”,and “mers”!
“Pair, paire, pere, pers”, and “perd”!
“Vair, vaire, ver, verre, verres, vert”,and “verts”!

This is the place to growl “zut”!
“C’est trop difficile”;
Give language learning the boot!
Except…the benefits are real.

The history is “riche”,
the grammar is interesting.
leaving France will be “triste”;
everything is fascinating!

Not to mention the rewards:
Really getting a joke;
When following a conversation isn’t hard
Competently chatting with a nice bloke.

I feel a warm flush of pride
in knowing how to say
nearly anything I might
be required to “connais”.

Tell French “Au revoir”?
Not when it gives me wings!
Instead I’ll be ”ce soir”,
Studying all the things!1.

And so is France: I'm living in France for the year attending University and attempting to become fluent in French.

Comments

I love love love this! I had six years of French in school and still try to keep it up. This really made me smile. :)

That's amazing! I've only been studying French for two years. Good luck keeping all your French; have you ever visited France? :)

I've been twice - once when I was little we were in Paris for a bit, and then last fall I my dad had 24 hours in Lyons for a flight and I got to go along.

Even though I know hardly any French, I still found this amusing. How cool that you're living in France!

This is great! I've decided to become a linguistics major, so I'm planning on becoming multilingual. I've always wanted to go to France. Is it amazing??? Anyway, I loved the rhythm of this poem as well as the mood. :)

France is indeed amazing. The culture isn't precisely to my taste, nor is the cuisine, but overall it is a wonderful life experience and I shall treasure always my memories of this year abroad. :)

If you have a smart phone, the app duolingo is free, and is a great language learning tool! Far more productive, too, to do than playing angry birds or someought. :P
