Chapter One

1. And the maidservant of Aurora was heavy with child, and she asked her husband if he might go out and fetch some cabbage from the neighbours yard.

2. And he did agree to do this thing, and he went out into the garden and fetched cabbage.

3. And out of the house came a woman who was very wroth, and said unto the man,

4. "Thou were breaking the commandment saying thou shalt not steal, and thou must give me thy baby to keep and raise as mine own for thy iniquity."

5. And the man was troubled in his heart, and the thing vexed him so that he agreed and took the cabbage unto his wife.

6. And he told her none of the things that had been said, and forgot about them until the birth of the girl.

7. And when she was born, they called her, Rapunzel for her long hair which flowed to her shoulders.

8. And she had been born only five minutes when the woman came in, and snatched the babe from the wife.

9. And she took Rapunzel away. And the poor maidservant wept bitterly, and her husband explained all the things unto her.

10. And they wept together, for their daughter was gone, and the woman had taken her.

11. And they wept bitterly until eve, and then laid down and slept.
