I'm not even sure that I'll finish this -- tell me what y'all think! :)
Prologue
Pamela sighed as she saw the task ahead of her; a dusty desk, crowded with dusty old books. Several empty ink bottles were scattered across the floor, and several feather pens strewn around. The floor needed a good sweep, too. Her grandfather had always been old fashioned, ever since she could remember. Tears welled up in her eyes, dear old grandpa. She remembered back to her fifth birthday, grandpa was bouncing her on his knee and singing a song; his hearty, full laugh filled her mind and more tears ran down her cheeks. Realizing her task ahead of her, she dried her tears. As she began to clear books away from the desk, a paper fell off of the desk; old and worn. Picking it up, she noticed the date, May 16, 1904. Reading further,
Dear Abe,
I saw Mike yesterday, he had his two little grand children in tote! Can you believe it – Mike! Already a grandfather! Time flies by so quickly. I'm afraid I'm growing not so little anymore. I miss you, Abe. Have you gotten any of my letters? I haven't gotten any replies to them. I miss you!
Love,
Mildred
“Who could Mildred be?” Pamela mumbled to herself; she'd never heard the name before, so the letter interested her. She turned the letter over. Nothing there. She brought the letter downstairs to grandma,
“Gramma?” Pamela called. Grandma came out of the kitchen, a platter of chocolate chip cookies in her hand.
“Yes, honey?” She asked, setting down the plate on the table. Pamela handed the letter to her,
“I found this letter – who was Mildred M.?”
“Hmm....” her grandmother put her glasses on the bridge of her nose and read the note; “Ah. Yes, Mildred, the dear girl. She was your grandfather's little sister.” Grandma sighed and handed the note back.
“Didn't grandpa ever reply to her? It sounds like he didn't?” Pamela was very confused. Surely grandpa would have answered his little sister's letters...surely.
“Oh, uh. No. Your grandpa – well, he..” grandma stuttered, a tear ran down her face. “It's rather hard to explain, darling. Why don't you just leave it be? Here, I made some cookies – would you like some?”
Pamela felt bad for upsetting grandma, and accepted two cookies. “Thank you. They are yummy – as always!”
Grandma smiled, pouring two glasses of milk, “they were your grandpa's favorite kind, you know.” She sat down and ate a cookie, too.
“Have you gotten much progress in grandpa's study?” she asked, glad for Pam's help.
“Well, not a whole lot. I was a little bit lost in my thoughts, but I'll get it done. You relax and don't worry about it, gramma.” Pam smiled. Giving her grandma a quick hug, she mumbled something about needing to get the cleaning done.

Ooh!
I really like this. It's intriguing and I think your wording was very well done in this. I like the beginning description of the study, it really paints a vivid picture for the reader. Well done.

Nice!
I like it! I really think you should continue the story.
Whenever I am writing something I never seem to get farther than the first sentence. I will have the whole story planned out in my head, but it just wont come out in words! Sigh.....I guess I'll just have to keep on trying.

Thank you Susannah :) Yes, I
Thank you Susannah :)
Yes, I do that all the time, too -- I have lots of stories saved that are just a sentence long, or a few or whatever :P
Sad to say, I'm thinking this is one of those unfinished stories -- unless I suddenly get an urge to write more. But at the moment, writers block is my plight :)
Thanks again!

I like it! It needs editing, of course, like any piece of writing... but it's a good start. Draws you in well, and it's intriguing. Now I want to read the rest of the story. :)
