Geese

water ripples

birds touch down

wide-spread wings

skim the surface

crying to one another

they settle on the lake

one leg of their journey over

another just ahead

it matters not how long the road

or how cold the wind blows

they continue on

to the call of the south

as they must

Every fall Canadian geese fly through Michigan, and they're pretty and sound lovely, but they always make me sad.

I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right. --The Book Thief
