Aslan's Side

In The Silver Chair by C.S. Lewis, Puddleglum the Marshwiggle makes an interesting statement.

The Lady of the Green Kirtle was trying to convince Puddleglum that there was no Narnia, no Aslan...telling him there was nothing worth being great or good for. She told him he ought to forget it all and just...sleep. She tells Puddleglum and his friends they have only dreamed and made up stories about Narnia and Aslan. Soon...they come to believe her.

Then Puddleglum stands up and says "Suppose we have only dreamed, or made up,. all those things....Then all I can say is that, in that case, the made-up things seem a good deal more important than the real ones...I'm on Aslan's side even if there isn't any Aslan to lead it. I'm going to live as a like a Narnian as I can even if there isn't any Narnia."

I think that sometimes, in real life, we are sometimes told that there is no 'Narnia'. There is nothing that requires us to be good, kind people. Sometimes we are told that we can just forget everything and 'eat drink and be merry'...because there is no other life that may require goodness.

Sometimes we get so caught up in the worldly things, we forget what really matters...

Sometimes people say we're crazy for believing in that other world...

And sometimes it just seems so hard to continue on, doing the right thing...and all those people who are filled with doubts start to rub off on us. We may start to question as well...

As I was thinking about all that, I made a decision.

I'm with Puddleglum. I'm going to live like a Narnian, even if there isn't any Narnia.

Why? Because that 'other world' is a good deal better than the one I see here. Because that's the only way to be truly happy...and deep down inside, I know that to be true. I know that being a good Narnian is the best life...here and also in the next.

I'm going to stay on Aslan's side...even if there isn't any Aslan to lead it.

Because living for something meaningful, even if it doesn't exist, is better than living for something that means nothing!
