Dear little firefly,
Flying all alone,
Dim and floating slow,
Not knowing where to go.
Didn't know if we caught you,
Or if you landed in our hands,
But the fact remains,
You rested in our open palm,
Having found a second home.
Fading we taught you how to glow,
Taught you how to fly straight,
To act beautiful,
To shine bright.
Little lonely firefly,
Flying in the night,
Didn't know how loved she was,
Didn't know how bright,
How bright,
How bright,
She shined bright in my life,
Her smile making up for all the pain.
Little lightningbug,
You would not believe your eyes,
Indeed you'd be quite surprised,
To see how much our lives have changed,
Together, you and I,
Me and you.
From bug to beauty,
I hope you know little one,
How very much,
How very very much,
How extremely much you're loved.
My little cousin who's been living with us for two years has gone back to her family. This is a poem inspired by her departure and her love of the "Fireflies" by Owl City. I will definitely miss her, but I will still consider her my little sister.

This is beautiful, Kass, and sad and bittersweet and uplifting. It's so many things, and written very eloquently. Gosh, that song. I remember being in such love with that song, and it makes me happy she loves it.

This is the perfect metaphor for the way she came into your life. Superbly worded.

This little verse has impeccable rhythm and it's so vivid.
I also love the how much our lives have changed line and the end wraps it up on such a strong note. I hope everything goes well for her, Kass.

I did read this a long time ago, and thought it was very, very sweet and beautiful. This is quality poetry, and I love the poetic ways you described your emotions. Using words like "firefly, bright, glow, and flying straight" - were smart and lovely! I hope you have been able to keep in touch with your cousin even though she is away now. I have friends who are in the same situation as you - their cousin lived with them for a couple years, and now is back in her country.
